Say Something Nice Day occurs June 1 each year as a response to bullying and a lack of courtesy in current society. This day is also for remembering special people in one’s life and apologizing to people one wronged in the past. Say Something Nice Day originated in Charleston, South Carolina. Inspired by the book “Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter at Work,” the Charleston and North Charleston mayors, together with some Baptist churches, created the National Say Something Nice Day in the hopes of kindness reciprocity.

Each year millions of people in the United Kingdom fall prey to scammers via the phone, online, mail, and doorstep. These scams rob consumers of thousands or even billions of pounds and leave scars, including emotional trauma and loss of confidence. Scams Awareness Month seeks to provide the people of Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland with the tools, reasoning, and education necessary to spot and avoid scams. The Citizen’s Advice website includes hundreds of resources and activities to help you become savvy about scams.

Scleroderma Awareness Month, Intl.: June

Initiated in the United Kingdom, Scleroderma Awareness Month seeks to unite organizations worldwide to increase awareness of this rare autoimmune condition. Scleroderma is a rare, chronic disease of the immune system, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Two and a half million people worldwide have scleroderma, with over 12,000 in the United Kingdom. It is an autoimmune condition, meaning the immune system becomes overactive and attacks healthy tissue.

Skyscraper Month: June

Skyscraper Month celebrates the diversity of the world's tallest buildings. Louis H. Sullivan created the first skyscraper. A mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright, he is considered the father of the American skyscraper. His most famous buildings include the Guaranty Building in Buffalo, New York; Wainwright Building in St. Louis, Missouri; Schiller Building and Theater in Chicago, Illinois; and the Auditorium Building in Chicago, Illinois. In 2017, 23 countries hosting 69 cities erected 144 skyscrapers worldwide, half of which are in China, breaking the previous record for the number of skyscrapers built in a year. For a building to be considered a skyscraper, it must be a minimum of 660 feet tall/200 meters. Hong Kong leads the world with the most skyscrapers, followed by Shenzhen, New York City, and Dubai. In 2022, China led in constructing skyscrapers with 86 new buildings. The United Arab Emirates came in second at nine, India at eight, and the United States at six. The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario designated June as Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. During this month, the Association educates the public about this condition. Spina Bifida is a birth defect occurring in the first month of the pregnancy before most women know they are pregnant. It permanently damages the spinal column and nervous system of the child. Hydrocephalus is a condition where fluid accumulates in the brain cavities, causing the veins to swell and brain damage.
