Bourbon Day marks the anniversary of the day Rev. Elijah Craig began distilling corn in Kentucky to produce bourbon in 1789. Bourbon is a 100% American invention, and the day is best celebrated neat or on the rocks. HISTORY OF BOURBON Bourbon's roots trace to the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the United States. The name "bourbon" comes from Bourbon County, a region in Kentucky at the time. Although the exact origins are undocumented, several key moments and people contributed to the development of bourbon as we know it today. In the late 1700s, European settlers (primarily of Scots-Irish and English descent) moved into the western frontier of the United States, including Kentucky, bringing knowledge of distilling, which they adapted to the local ingredients—corn, rye, and barley. The limestone-filtered water in the region also played an essential role in bourbon production. Elijah Craig, a Baptist minister, and distiller, is partly attributed to its creation. On June 14, 1789, he is said to have been the first to age whiskey in charred oak barrels, which imparted the distinct caramel and vanilla flavors characteristic of bourbon. This practice became a standard for bourbon production. Bourbon County is not necessarily the birthplace of the spirit; however, it was a significant center for whiskey production and trade in the early 19th century. Whiskeys from this region found distribution on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in barrels marked "Bourbon," and the name stuck. During the 1820s-1850s, bourbon production flourished, with many distilleries opening in Kentucky. The whiskey gained popularity in the southern United States and became known as a distinctly American spirit. The American Civil War disrupted bourbon production, as many distilleries were destroyed or repurposed for the war effort. Following the war, the bourbon industry recovered and grew again. The Bottled-in-Bond Act (1897) established strict regulations for producing and labeling "bonded" whiskey, including bourbon. To be labeled bottled-in-bond, a bourbon had to be made by a single distiller in a single distillation season, aged for at least four years in a government-bonded warehouse, and bottled at 100 proof (50 percent alcohol by volume) to ensure the quality and consistency of bourbon. Prohibition (1920-1933), created with the passage of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Volstead Act, effectively shut down the legal production and sale of alcoholic beverages, including bourbon. Some distilleries were allowed to continue production for medicinal purposes, but overall, the bourbon industry suffered greatly. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the bourbon industry slowly recovered. During World War II, many distilleries were repurposed to produce industrial alcohol, bourbon production increased, and the spirit regained popularity in the post-war years. In the late 20th through the early 21st century, bourbon experienced a renaissance with the rise of craft distilleries and a renewed appreciation for the spirit's unique flavors and heritage. Bourbon has experienced increased global popularity, with enthusiasts enjoying its rich history and diverse flavors. Bourbon's history intertwines with the history of the United States and remains an iconic and beloved American spirit.

Provide information and support: AEDs allow prospective adoptive parents to gather information about the adoption process and learn about the available support services. These events often feature workshops, seminars, and presentations from experienced professionals and adoptive families. Facilitate connections: By bringing together prospective adoptive parents and children waiting for adoption, AEDs allow both parties to interact and potentially form connections, which is crucial in helping the children find families they can thrive with. Improve the adoption process: AEDs help streamline the adoption process by offering a centralized location for families to learn about available children and the support they need, leading to more successful matches and reducing the time children wait in the care system. While Adoption Exchange Days have proved successful in helping many children find their forever families, some critics argue that these events can feel like a "shopping experience" or "beauty pageant" for children. To address these concerns, organizers strive to create a sensitive, supportive environment that respects the children's and families' dignity.

Flag Day (1777): June 14

Flag Day was created in 1886 by Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin. He decided to hold a Flag Birthday Party on June 14, the Stars and Stripes US flag creation anniversary in 1777. Cigrand continued to advocate for this day by advertising it in magazines and newspapers. Soon, people from New York and some organizations in Pennsylvania started to follow suit. They began to display flags in various public buildings and homes. Schoolchildren were also given small flags and were encouraged to sing patriotic songs. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that there should be a National Flag Day. It was in August of 1949 that this occasion became official through the signing of legislation by President Harry Truman, making June 14 National Flag Day.

National Pop Goes the Weasel Day commemorates the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes the Weasel." This nursery rhyme is around 400 years old and originated as a dance; lyrics were added later. By the 19th century, it evolved into a children's game. In 1961, Anthony Newly, a British singer, recorded a pop version of this rhyme, and it reached number 12 on the United Kingdom singles chart. Children sing the song while forming a ring with one player in the middle to play the game. The person in the middle is the weasel. The children rush to create new rings when the line "Pop goes the weasel" is said. The last person to join falls out of the game, which is repeated until only one player is left.

The Wianki Festival (Wreath Festival) is a Polish tradition from pre-Christian times featuring the floating of wreaths on the Wisla River in Krakow, Poland. National Bug Busting Day occurs three times yearly in the United Kingdom: January, June, and October. It is a concentrated effort to stem the tide of lice infections within schools and the general population. Through the registered charity Community Hygiene Concern, the government teaches parents, educators, and pharmacists how to detect and stop the spread of head lice and provides affordable Bug Busting kits. The late Dr. RJ Donaldson started Community Bug Busting Days, affectionately known as Paddy. Dr. Donaldson demonstrated in the 1970s that an intensive detection/treatment campaign could dramatically cut the prevalence of head lice. He was the tireless mentor of the Bug Busting Days organized by Community Hygiene Concern, taking a personal interest from 1986 in our development of wet detection methods in preference to less effective dry or damp methods. Today Bug Busting Days are organized in partnership with the Department of Health. Lice are a big problem in schools. Once they infect an individual, these parasites can be very difficult to get rid of. The following are some facts: The eggs of head lice usually take seven to ten days to hatch. Combing dry or damp hair with a fine-tooth comb is not a reliable way to detect lice. Metal combs are unsuitable for louse detection because these combs are primarily nit combs. Lice caught between the tightly spaced teeth remains unnoticed against the metal and can be combed back into the hair unharmed at subsequent strokes. No studies prove that wet head lice grasp hairs more tightly, thus hampering their removal with a fine-tooth comb. There is no scientific proof that prolonged head-to-head is required to catch lice—close contact is enough. Head lice are a community problem. Approximately 20 percent of head lice cases occur in people over 16 or under four years old.

Apple cider vinegar and dish soap will attract them, keep them out of your fruit, and win.
