The Tony Awards, otherwise known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, recognize the achievements of Broadway productions and performances. An annual ceremony, this is presented in New York City by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. Considered the highest honor for theater, this is equivalent to the Academy Awards for motion pictures and the Grammy Awards for music. The winners are determined by voters from within the theater and entertainment industry and members of the press. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Trojan Horse (1184 BC): June 11

June 11, 1184, BC is when the Mycenaean Greeks used their secret weapon, the Trojan Horse, to gain the advantage and defeat the city of Troy. The Trojan Horse was designed by carpenter Epeius. The large wooden structure was hollow and concealed several soldiers inside it. The Greeks brought this statue to the gates of Troy, leaving it. Their agent Sinon convinced the Trojans the Greeks had abandoned the war and had left the horse as an offering to the goddess Athena. Unbeknownst to the Trojans, the Greeks had sailed to one of the adjacent islands to wait for the horse to be moved inside the gates of Troy. Once the Trojans moved the offering inside the city walls, the soldiers inside came out, unlocked the gates, and let the balance of the Greek army into the city. Now in full force, the Greeks razed Troy, and the war ended. The Trojan horse has been iconic ever since and is often invoked as a metaphor for subversion and stealth.

Banning Interracial Marriage Ruled Unconstitutional (Loving 1967): June 12

June 12, 1967, is the day Americans finally became free to marry whomever they wanted, regardless of race, origin, or faith, due to the landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court in Loving vs. Virginia. Previous interracial marriage laws were now void. Mildred Loving, a black woman, married Richard Perry Loving, a white man. In Virginia, such a union was deemed criminal due to the anti-miscegenation statute (that a white person cannot marry a black person), which resulted in Richard Loving being sentenced to a year in prison. The couple was married in Washington, DC, to bypass the Racial Integrity Act of 1924. However, the couple returned to Central Point, Virginia, where the police raided their home while the Lovings were sleeping. In the initial trial, Leon M. Bazile reiterated the 18th-century meaning of race. On January 6. 1959, the Lovings were sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty. A 25-year sentence was suspended, providing the couple left Virginia, so they moved to the District of Columbia. In 1964, Lovings wrote to Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who forwarded their case to ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). The civil rights group filed a brief stating that the statutes contradicted the Fourteenth Amendment. On this day in 1967, the US Supreme Court found that the previous conviction was invalid and discriminatory due to the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Child Labor, World Day Against: June 12

World Day Against Child Labor Day is sponsored by the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC). This day seeks to raise awareness of the issue of child labor worldwide. Each year focuses on a different theme. In 2015, education as a means to stop child labor was the topic of concentration. IPEC falls under the International Labour Organization(ILO), which created this event in 1992 to eliminate child labor by providing means to countries to strengthen their efforts to combat child labor and promote global awareness of child labor. IPEC is the most extensive operation program of the International Labor Organization.

Diabetes Week (UK): June 12-18

Diabetes Week in the United Kingdom aims to uncover the truth about diabetes, what it’s like to live with it, and what you wish everyone knew about living with it. Throughout the year, Diabetes UK cultivates diabetes truths from those living with the disease. People with diabetes are asked to share what they’d like people to know about diabetes and the diabetes myths they’d like to bust. Falafel Day, Intl.: June 12

The vegetarian favorite, falafel, is believed to have originated in Egypt with Coptic Christians as a substitute for meat during the forty days of Lent. The actual history is unknown, but this is plausible. Today it is a mainstay at Middle Eastern restaurants and a favorite of food truck vendors. Falafel is created from fava beans or chickpeas mixed with spices and deep fried into balls and is often served on flat bread or atop rice, and each country makes its version of this, now an international favorite. International Falafel Day is a grassroots event that has gained popularity online.

Independence Day (PH)(1898): June 12

On June 12, 1898, the archipelago nation of the Philippines declared its independence from colonial power Spain, which had ruled it for over 300 years. It would take another two months for the Filipino rebels, led by Emilio Aguinaldo and supported by the US military, to formerly chase Spanish troops from the island.

Research confirms a direct link between infant parent-child bonding or attachment difficulties and psychiatric disorders in later life. This week includes parental and professional workshops, outreach, and tools throughout both nations.

King's Birthday (AU): June 12

National Little League Baseball Week began with President John F Kennedy in 1961 and is to occur on the beginning on the second Monday of June each year. The following is the presidential proclamation establishing this week. Proclamation 3407—National Little League Baseball Week April 18, 1961 By the President of the United States of America "Whereas active participation by youth in appropriate physical activities contributes to their fitness and to the maintenance of our national vigor and vitality; and Whereas Little Leagues in communities throughout the Nation have made it possible for thousands of young boys to take an active part in our national game of baseball; and Whereas Little League baseball not only promotes the physical well-being of the players, but also instills into them the qualities of fairness, cooperation, and discipline-qualities which contribute to the development of good citizenship; and Whereas the Congress, by House Concurrent Resolution 17, agreed to June 1, 1959, has requested the President to designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of each year as National Little League Baseball Week, in recognition of the national and community benefits resulting from Little League activity: Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of 1961, and the week beginning the second Monday in June of each succeeding year, as National Little League Baseball Week. And I invite the people of the United States to observe that week in schools, parks, athletic fields, and other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies and activities designed to emphasize the importance of the physical development of our Nation's youth. Lonliness Awareness Week, (UK): June 12-18

Created in 2017, Loneliness Awareness Week in the United Kingdom focuses on the importance of building awareness about loneliness's impact on the people around us. Anyone can be lonely, and everyone feels lonely at some point, and the pandemic has exasperated the situation for many. This week is about reaching out to friends and neighbors and raising awareness about loneliness and its impact on quality of life, health, and the community. At LEEP, this has to be our favorite event champion name, "Marmalade Trust." How cute is that? And it is so fun to say!

Medgar Evers Day (1963): June 12

Medgar Evans Day marks the anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers on June 12, 1963. On this day, some organizations do volunteer work about justice and service, two values Medgar Evers stood for. Medgar Wiley Evers was a black civil rights leader born on July 2, 1925. His work involved overturning black segregation at the University of Mississippi. He was the field secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was among those who invaded Normandy during WWII. After the war, he joined NAACP to fight for black people's civil rights. Evers was responsible for gathering evidence and witnesses for the Emmitt Till murder case, a controversial case that brought light to the plight of African Americans living in the Southern United States during segregation. On June 12, 1963, Evers, a white supremacist, was assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. His wife's fight for justice is told in the 1996 film "The Ghosts of Mississippi" starring Alec Baldwin, James Woods, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Men's Health Week, Ntl.: June 12-18

National Men’s Health Week falls on the third week of June, during National Men’s Health Month. Sponsored by Men’s Health Network, this promotion raises awareness of the health issues biological men face nationwide. It encourages organizations to create policies and services that serve the male population better. Men are encouraged to wear blue to support this awareness campaign. Blue ribbon lapel pins represent the fight against prostate cancer; the week also features national health fairs, fitness demonstrations, and healthy cooking tutorials.
