Today is National Cotton Candy Day. Associated with carnivals and fairs, the blown sugar candy known as cotton candy has been a favorite with children and adults since its invention in 1887. At the time, it was known as Fairy Floss (its inventor was Dr. William Morrison, a dentist). The candy made its international debut at the 1904 World's Fair.

As of 2010, texting and social media applications have quickly surpassed email as the favorite form of non-professional interaction. The sheer volume of emails we receive is a matter of concern for many people. National Email Week's primary purpose is to raise awareness of emails' do's and don'ts while providing tips that allow people to manage their email correspondences.

Flag Week, Ntl.: June 11-17

National Flag Week always centers on June 14, National Flag Day. This week, Americans display the American flag in their homes and public buildings. Other activities to commemorate this occasion include flag-raising ceremonies, essay competitions, and street parades. The National Flag Foundation is actively seeking activities that can nurture the love of the American flag and the traditions that come along with it to keep this occasion alive. This occasion started in 1886 when Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin, decided to hold a Flag Birthday on June 14, coinciding with the 108th anniversary of the Stars and Stripes US flag. Cigrand continued to advocate for this day by advertising it in magazines and newspapers. Soon enough, people from New York and some organizations in Pennsylvania started to follow suit. They began to display flags in various public buildings and homes. Schoolchildren were also given small flags and were encouraged to sing patriotic songs. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that there should be a National Flag Day. It was in August of 1949 that this occasion became official by signing the legislation by President Harry Truman, making June 14 Flag Day.

German Chocolate Cake Day, Ntl.: June 11

National German Chocolate Cake Day is a day to commemorate the creator of the baking chocolate used in German chocolate cake: American Samuel German. German created the semi-sweet dark chocolate in 1852 while working for American Baker's Chocolate Company. Fast forward to 1957 when Mrs. George Clay published the first recipe using Baker's Chocolate to make a cake, dubbed the German Chocolate Cake, in honor of the creator of the key ingredient.

History Day Competition, Ntl.: June 11-15

History Day is a competition that begins in May. It was created in 1974 "to counter the devaluation of history as a field of study." Students present their research, analysis, and conclusions in one of five formats: a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. The contest is open to students in junior high and high school. Each year a theme is released, and students and teachers then choose a topic within that theme. Approximately 500,000 students enter annually, and around 2,500 make it to the finals. About 100 participants receive awards ranging from $500 to $2000 in winning categories. Most Americans are unaware that we do not study history in the United States in K-12. We learn social studies. Social studies focus on when, who, and what the event's impact on society, the contributions of individuals, and stories. History includes the why and context of the period it occurred. It requires critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to look at events, trends, and the larger picture dispassionately and absent from current political pressures or trends. Whereas social studies are more about sociology and culture, history is closer to science in its analytical approach to information.

Just One Day, Day (2001): June 11

Animal advocates spend June 11 each year supporting no-kill shelters, providing medical care, shots, and spaying or neutering for animals trapped at kill facilities. These animals would be dead were it not for Just One Day. Thousands of organizations in every state take part. Stanford Law graduate, former prosecutor, and attorney Nathan Winograd created Just One Dayon on June 11, 2001.

Odunde Festival (US-PA): June 11

Attracting nearly 500,000 people per year and netting the city of Philadelphia over $28 million in economic activity, the Odunde Festival is the largest celebration of African-American culture in the world. Created in 1975 by Nigerian immigrants, the Odunde festival covers 15 city blocks in South Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood. Festivities begin at 23rd and South Street and feature two stages with rotating music venues. African crafts, food, and drinks are available throughout the festival.

The Peabody Awards were first established in 1940 by philanthropist George Foster Peabody. They have since become one of the most prestigious awards in broadcasting, affectionately referred to as the "Pulitzer Prizes of radio and television." The Peabody Awards recognize excellence in various categories, including news, entertainment, documentary, education, children's programming, public service, and digital media. Programs, producers, directors, writers, and others who have made outstanding contributions to the broadcasting and digital media field are eligible for awards. The Peabody Awards do not have categories or set numbers of winners. Rather, the awards are presented to programs and individuals based on merit and impact, as determined by the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. The jurors include media professionals, scholars, and critics from the United States. Winning a Peabody Award is a great honor in the broadcasting and digital media industries; past winners include some of the most iconic and groundbreaking programs and creators in television and radio history. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated.
