Today is the indigenous people of America's National Day of Mourning. Organized since 1970 by the Native Americans of New England, it's a day of protest against, and a reminder of, the genocide against them. Between 1492 and 1900, 90% of the Native American population in the United States was wiped out by guns, famine, forced relocation, and disease. The National Day of Mourning coincides with Thanksgiving Day on purpose. For Native Americans, it is a day of mourning, not one of thanks.

Thanksgiving in the United States falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and it is a national holiday, often spreading over the entire weekend. Thanksgiving celebrations occur in most American households, where the focus is a large feast shared with friends and family. Roast turkey is the usual meat dish, served with mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and cranberry sauce. For Americans without friends or family to feast with, volunteering at local soup kitchens or hosting free dinners for the homeless is a common activity. In New York City, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually and is usually played in the background as the meal is prepared. The President of the United States pardons a turkey, assuring that the turkey can freely roam farmland for the rest of its life. Thanksgiving in the United States was first proclaimed in 1789 by George Washington. Yet it would wait until 1863 to be a national holiday. At the time, President Lincoln decreed it to bring people together during the Civil War. Thanksgiving commemorates the harvest feast, which occurred over three days in October 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, between the Native Americans and pilgrim settlers. Without the help of Native Americans, the pilgrims would not have survived their first winter. In 1939, President Roosevelt fixed Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday in November.

The FIFA World Cup, a football/soccer tournament played by professional adult male athletes, is the most anticipated sporting event in the world. In 2022 the event will occur in Doha, Qatar, and will feature 32 teams playing in 64 matches over 28 days in eight stadiums. The event provides temporary employment for over 30,000 people and draws over one million fans. The championship began in 1872, with a match between England and Scotland in Glasgow. In 1884 it was expanded to international teams, becoming the official championship in 1906 after the creation of FIFA in 1904. At the time, the World Cup was tied to the Olympics, which required amateur rather than professional athletes to compete. The year 1924 began the creation of football tournaments specifically for professional athletes. The first official World Cup was played in Uruguay on July 13, 1930, between Uruguay and Argentina, and Uruguay took the cup. The game is played every four years, except in 1942 and 1946, both suspended due to World War II. Brazil currently leads with five World Cup titles. In 2026, the World Cup will expand to 48 teams and be held in three countries: The United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Come and Take It Day (1778): November 25*

"Come and Take It!" was a rallying cry during the American Revolution and later turned into the motto of the Tea Party. Tradition states the words were first spoken by Revolutionary War hero Lt. Col. John Mc Intosh, commander of Fort Morris at Sunbury. Mc Intosh shouted the challenge: "Come and take it!" to the British fleet arriving on November 25, 1778. The ships sought to force the fort to surrender, and a standoff resulted in the British leaving temporarily. However, they returned in January 1779 and managed to take the fort then. Come and Take It! has come to epitomize American chutzpah and dogged defiance. This event is one of two Come and Take it Days, with the first based upon an event in 1835. The phrase "Come and Take It!" was first used in 480 BC in the Battle of Thermopylae by King Leonidas of Sparta against the Persians.
