Yellow Pigs Day is an annual celebration associated primarily with the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. The program is a summer math camp for high school students from all over the world who love math and want to learn more in a less austere and calculated manner. Their "secret symbol" the yellow pig with the number 17 printed on it, goes back to the 1970s. Not only is Yellow Pigs Day an excuse to bring together alumni, but it is also a celebration of the number 17. Why yellow pigs? That isn't explained. However, everything on campus and in the classroom has to do with the prime number 17, and yellow pigs are everywhere. Yellow Pigs Day is celebrated worldwide and now includes its own songs, traditions and general clowning around that has been adopted by programs including Mathcamp, PROMYS, MIT, the University of Chicago, and even Stanford. Youth Skills Day, World: July 15

From the United Nations: "Why is World Youth Skills Day important? Rising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in today's world for developed and developing countries alike. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020: Technology and the future of jobs shows that since 2017, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET). In 2016 there were 259 million young people classified as NEET – a number that rose to an estimated 267 million in 2019, and is projected to continue climbing to around 273 million in 2021. In terms of percentage, the trend was also slightly up from 21.7% in 2015 to 22.4% in 2020 – implying that the international target to reduce the NEET rate by 2020 will be missed. Designated by the General assembly in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship."

ZIP Code Day marks the 1963 anniversary of adopting the zip code system in the United States. This simple addition to addresses has tremendous economic importance and is essential in allowing packages and letters to find their ultimate destination quickly. ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. The ZIP Code began as postal district numbers in London and Liverpool, England, and the system eventually spread throughout the world by the end of World War II.

Ebola, SARS, Corona, Avian Flu, West Nile virus, Salmonella, and MERS are Zoonotic diseases that transmit from animal to human, often with deadly effects. World Zoonosis Day seeks to increase awareness of how these diseases develop and transfer and what is required to treat and survive them. Annually 1/3 of the global population falls ill to zoonotic diseases; of these, an average of 2.5 million die.

Beer Fest, Diekirch (LU): July 17

The little nation of Luxembourg is famous for its craft beers. Each year, Diekirch hosts a Beer Festival on the 3rd Sunday of July. We encourage people to return and reach out to bereaved parents and their families. Give them someone who will listen to them without advising them; a shoulder to cry on, and a hug when appropriate. Basically, be there for the bereaved.

Bikini Day (1946): July 5

Today is the anniversary of the aquatic clothing style that has enchanted men and terrified women into dieting for nearly five generations. The bikini premiered on July 5, 1946; designed by Frenchman Louis Réard; he marketed the tiny swimsuit as 'smaller than the world's smallest swimsuit.' It is called "bikini" because it exploded into the market. At the time, nuclear tests were being conducted at Bikini Atoll.

Shaun McLaughlin created black Family Month in New York to focus on the needs of Black families. The month utilizes the tradition of family reunions to get the community involved. Involvement includes supplying free health services, education, and entertainment opportunities. Families are encouraged to do activities together such as reading, family dinners, classes, and attend annual check-ups. The organizers are no longer available for this event; however, tradition has it on the calendar, and it continues to be observed by African American families throughout the country.

Blueberry Month, Ntl.: July

Since 2003 the NABC and the US Department of Agriculture have recognized July as National Blueberry Month. The Canadian Government also recognizes its National Blueberry Month in August. Blueberries are grown in 36 of the 50 states in the US. They are a favorite summer fruit, high in antioxidants and other health benefits. Bowdler's Day (UK) (1754): July 11

Bowdler's Day in the UK celebrates the life and achievements of Thomas Bowdler (July 11, 1754 - February 24, 1825). Bowdler was a physician and a philanthropist, best known for publishing "The Family Shakespeare," an abridged edition of William Shakespeare's work, edited by his sister, Henrietta Maria Bowdler. The editing was censored words and ideas deemed inappropriate for women and children at the time. "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and parts of the Old Testament of the Bible round out his notable works. Bowdler may be considered the original Cliff Notes, cheat sheets cherished by high school and college literature students!
