National Insurance Awareness Day comes about at the end of the second quarter and a couple of days before the beginning of third quarter, which is the start of many fiscal years for a number of corporations and organizations. The day is set aside as an annual reminder urging people and companies to review their insurance coverage and eliminate that not needed or amend policies that are deficient. This includes home, life, medical, auto, renters, workers compensation, credit, extended disability and other coverages unique to your situation. This is an unofficial event with no sponsor. Personal note from Laura: My car insurance shopping nightmare 2018: I recently returned from living overseas and as I've awaited my car's arrival, I've been shopping car insurance. What happened over the four years I was overseas? When I left to go overseas, my car was still being paid for and I lived in Los Angeles, car capital of the United States. My full coverage was about $90/month in 2014. My car then is the same I'm insuring now. I have no accidents or tickets in over 20 years and I've been continually insured. That is the same coverage I had in Los Angeles, in Philadelphia, starts at $163/month. Quotes went as high as $638/month for a six year old car worth about $15K driven by a middle aged, college educated woman with a perfect driving record and excellent credit. Seriously? WHAT I DISCOVERED SHOPPING FOR CAR INSURANCE The first item to take note of is the default 'Tort Lite' option. If you don't read the fine print on your policy or quote, you won't realize you're automatically channeled into this Tort Lite option. Essentially, Tort Lite eliminates your ability to sue for more than medical bills, (which you'll notice the insurance caps). If you've ever been in a serious accident, you know you don't get better right away. It affects every part of your life. With tort lite you abdicate your ability to sue for loss wages, pain and suffering and care beyond the pre-set cap. What used to be part of full coverage: $25,000 property damage, $50-$100K per accident medical, death benefit, lost wages and towing/car rental, if you're focused on an affordable rate and 'saving $570 per year' or '15% in 15 minutes' as commercials say, you won't notice these are not included at these levels. You'll likely see property damage at $5,000. Per-accident medical, $15-$30K, often with a limit on two people only. Death benefits, rentals, towing, lost wages aren't included at all. You'll have to opt-in for this in the customized cafeteria plan. You may get uninsured coverage with low limits, but not underinsured. If you allow the default to 'tort lite', you can't sue for any of this either after the fact. If you take the straight quote, you won't see this. Another advent is voluntary monitoring devices many of the insurance companies promote for a discount if you agree to use it through your smart phone or use their plugin. Being ticket and accident free isn't enough. They need to know and log every place you drive, how many miles you drive, at what speed, how often you put on the brakes, plus anything else electronic surveillance makes possible. It requires you trust them not to change their privacy and collection policies as technology advances. You trade privacy for 10-30% of your fee. It's spyware, plain and simple. Some insurance companies make you buy extra insurance in case you're in a chain reaction accident. They'll only cover the first car that hits you, not damage from a second. They'll decide what injuries and damage goes with what car. It is mind boggling. The newest entry to car insurance is firms that offer a 'low monthly base rate' but charge you for every mile you drive, (also requires you use spyware). Tempting, until you do the math. If you commute or drive 1,000 miles a month, you've already exceeded the higher quality insurance costs, without spyware. I haven't even addressed comprehensive and collision. No need for that. I think you get the idea. Verify what you're getting. You might be surprised.

They help us sift through information, consider facts and challenge perceived notions. Columnists' Day was created by Jim Six, a columnist with the Gloucester County Times and later South Jersey Times from 1984-2014. Six passed away in 2017, but his event continues in his honor and to honor the columnists who keep us entertained and informed. Always on the 4th Tuesday in June.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) Awareness Day, Intl.: June 28

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder. Children born with it cannot process the amino acid phenylalanine. This results in mental disabilities and neurological issues including memory loss and mood disorders, if left untreated after birth. Special medical foods are required by children and adults living with PKU. There is no cure for PKU. In order to avoid irreversible brain damage, patients eat special diets, take medication and restrict the amount of phenylalanine in their diet. International Phenylketonuria Awareness Day was first held in 2013, and seeks to raise awareness about this disease and raise funds for treatment and a possible cure.

Treaty of Versailles (1919): June 28

Today is the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, June 28, 1919. The document officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers five years after the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Some of the provisions of the treaty included taking responsibility for the damage caused during the war by Germany and its allies, disarmament of Germany and reparation payment to countries that had been formed the Entente powers. The Treaty of Versailles was harsh and merciless to the losing side and is often cited as a key reason for the growing discontent and race tensions that arose during the 1920s, which led to the rise of fascism in Europe and ultimately WWII.

Photography enthusiasts have a lot to celebrate on National Camera Day. Today is the anniversary that the first Kodak camera went on sale June 29, 1888. The camera documents whatever is happening in the world. Before its invention, people relied on paintings, which were very expensive and could only be viewed by a select group of people. Photography changed that. It documents day-to-day living quickly and it can be reproduced easily. The camera is not a recent invention. Several cultures claim the invention of the camera. Ibn Yunus of Egypt is often cited in Western cultures as the inventor, sometime near 1000 AD. However, written documentation to pin-hole style, or camera obscura, exist nearly 1400 years earlier in 391 BC, according to Chinese records. Therein, Mozi writes of the process used in pinhole cameras to project an image. These early cameras, however, did not allow for the collection of an image, only its projection. This changed early in the nineteenth century. The first photograph was taken by Nicephore Niepce in 1814. He recorded the image on silver chloride-coated paper. This prototype, however, was not permanent. In 1827, he was able to produce a more permanent photograph by using a wooden camera developed by Charles and Vincent Chevalier. The first true photograph was developed in 1836 by Louis Daguerre using a copper and silver mix plate that is coated with iodine vapor. George Eastman of the Kodak Company produced the first film camera. By the early 2000s, cameras became digitized, resulting to higher resolutions and clearer photographs that are much more easily reproduced and shared.

Federal-Aid Interstate Highway Act (1956): June 29

Today is the anniversary of the passage of the Federal-Aid Interstate Highway Act in 1956. The story of how the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 (also known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act) came about is an interesting one. In 1919, 28-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower participated in the popular convoy across the Lincoln highway, which was the longest road in the country at that time. The trip was exhausting and took too long for Eisenhower's liking. During World War II, Eisenhower observed the popular German autobahn network and was very impressed by it. These two events spurred him to announce his ""Grand Plan"" for highways in 1954 once President of the United States. It became law two years later on June 29, 1956.
