May 11, 1908 the first National Gathering of Governors occurred. The president at the time was Teddy Roosevelt. The day commemorates the coming together of the nation’s governors and the decisions made that day to protect America’s natural resources and institute a nationwide system of conservation and preservation. National Twilight Zone Day received its name due to the comment of William Jennings Bryan, the future Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. His point was that there can be no twilight zone between state and federal government that would allow corporations to exploit the nation’s natural resources. Bryan stated: "I am jealous of any encroachment upon the rights of the State, believing that the States are as indestructible as the Union is indissoluble. It is, however, entirely consistent with this theory to believe, as I do believe, that it is just as imperative that the general Government shall discharge the duties delegated to it, as it is that the States shall exercise the powers reserved to them. There is no twilight zone between the Nation and the State, in which exploiting interests can take refuge from both, and my observation is that most-not all, but most-of the contentions over the line between Nation and State are traceable to predatory corporations, which are trying to shield themselves from deserved punishment, or endeavoring to prevent needed restraining legislation." At the conference, a Governors' Resolutions Committee prepared a declaration of the Governors' view that: (1) Conservation of natural resources was a subject of transcendent importance; (2) The President was to be commended for calling the Conference to seek remedies for environmental degradation through the cooperation of the federal government and the states; (3) The President should call the Governors and members of Congress together from time to time in the future to continue their dialogue concerning natural resource protection; and (4) Each state should appoint a Commission on the Conservation of Natural Resources.

International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Fibromyalgia Awareness Day occurs each year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820) since 1992. She was believed to have been afflicted with ME/CFS. Both the International Day and Week are initiated by The CFIDS Association of America and observed throughout the world, but most notably in England, South Africa, the US, Canada and Australia. The purpose of the week and focus day are to draw attention to the illness, inform the public of their options should they be struggling with ME/CFS or suspect they have it, and raise funds toward finding a cure. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating chronic illness. This is a middle age disease, striking mostly women, people in their 30s and 40s during the prime of life. However it can strike any sex and any age. Over 1 million people in the US and 10s of millions worldwide suffer. Symptoms include: Visual blurring, light sensitivity and eye pain Difficulty maintaining upright posture Dizziness, balance problems and fainting Chills and night sweats Trouble sleeping Gastrointestinal disturbances Allergies and sensitivities to foods, odors, chemicals, medications Brain fog and cognitive impairment Gynecological problems including PMS Irritability, depression and mood swings The severity of ME/CFS varies greatly. About 25 percent of people with ME/CFS are disabled by the illness. Most symptoms are invisible to others. Common conditions that occur along with ME/CFS include: Fibromyalgia Orthostatic intolerance Irritable bowel syndrome Interstitial cystitis Temporomandibular joint disorder Chronic pelvic pain Multiple chemical sensitivity Studies show that fewer than 20 percent of ME/CFS patients in the United States have been properly diagnosed. Diagnosing ME/CFS is a challenging process because there is still not one diagnostic test or biomarker that is conclusive. The cause is unknown and currently no cure exists for ME/CFS.

Limerick Day (1812): May 12

Limerick Day marks the birthday of the writer who popularizing the whimsical poetry known as the limerick. Edward Lear was born May 12, 1812 in Holloway England and became a prominent writer and illustrator. One of his most famous works is The Owl and the Pussycat. Mohini Ekadashi is a Hindu fast to free the soul from illusion. It is believed that whomsoever observes a complete fast on this sacred day will collect future benefits and live happily in this life and the next. Hindus believe in reincarnation. Adherence to this day’s customs is also believed to release one from suffering and misery. Lord Krishna states that “There is no place of pilgrimage, no sacrifice, and no charity that can bestow merit equal to even one sixteenth of the merit a faithful devotee of Mine obtains by observing Mohini Ekadashi; and he who hears and studies the glories of Mohini Ekadashi achieves the merit of giving away one thousand cows in charity." This Ekadashi is always on the eleventh day of every lunar fortnight in traditional Hindu calendar. National Realtor Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the Association of Realtors May 12, 1908, in Chicago. The organization began with 120 members, 19 Boards and one state association. The Code of Ethics was adopted in 1913 with the Golden Rule as its theme. In 1916, the National Association of Real Estate Exchange's changed its name to The National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB) and adopted the term Realtor® for its members. This term and its derivatives were trademarked on Sept. 13, 1949, and Jan. 10, 1950. In 1972 the organization took the name National Association of Realtors® (NAR). Today, membership has surpassed 1.2 million members with 54 State Associations, including the territories Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month that falls on a Friday in the Gregorian calendar. The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan (Maundy Thursday), the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky prior to the 19th century. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. It's been estimated that $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day, although there is no scientific evidence or much substantial background.
