Teachers Appreciation Week: May 2-6

06:20 AM | -
Sponsored by the National Parents and Teachers Association, Nation Teacher Appreciation Week takes place during the first full school week of May since its launch in 1984. Teachers play a key role in student success and sometimes a simple “thanks” is all a teacher needs to feel valued. The decision to teach often comes with low-to-moderate pay and around-the-clock hours. Support from families can ease the difficult work teachers do. The PTA provides the following ideas to help students honor teachers: Write letters and cards of appreciation to your students’ teachers throughout the week and ask you students’ teachers how you can support them throughout the year. Show your support for the tremendous work teachers do by volunteering in your students’ classrooms. Nominate your students’ teachers for local and national awards. Tell us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram how you plan to appreciate your students’ teachers using the hashtag #ThankATeacher. Pick up the April/May edition of Our Children magazine, which is devoted to teachers’ perspectives and offers parents great advice for building a strong relationship with their students’ educators. Give the gift of PTA membership to a teacher in your life. Follow the new PTA Pinterest boards for more teacher appreciation ideas. Follow the new PTA Instagram account to share how you #ThankATeacher. National PTA has also created customizable recognition tools for you and your child to use to make your teacher feel special.

Tuna Day, World: May 2

06:20 AM | -
World Tuna Day is a day that commemorates the fish most commonly used in cooking, the tuna. In 2017 the United Nations officially added World Tuna Day to its dossier of awareness campaigns, recognizing the critical role of tuna to sustainable development, food security, economic opportunity, and livelihoods of people around the world. Tuna species account for 20% of fish caught in the oceans, and over 8% of internationally traded seafood. The fish plays a key role in ensuring a healthy and robust marine ecosystem. Nearly two-thirds of the tuna currently served in restaurants and purchased through supermarkets originates in the Pacific Ocean. Small Island Development States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDC) benefit most from the sustainable use of marine resources and the challenges that are affecting tuna stocks. However, the decline in Ocean health continues to affect all species of fish, including tuna. This makes the future outlook of this essential food source uncertain.

Chocolate Custard Day, Ntl.: May 3

06:20 AM | -
National Chocolate Custard Day has a bit of contention. Nobody knows its origin, so nobody knows if May 3rd or May 5th is the correct date. Going back over the past ten years we find it marked on both. Therefore, we're marking it as the third simply because it comes first. However, if you want to celebrate on the fifth, or from the third through the fifth, go for it. One can never have too much chocolate custard! National Chocolate Custard Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

Day of the Holy Cross (MX): May 3

06:20 AM | -
It was the construction unions in Mexico that chose to defy Pope John XXIII’s cancellation of this feast day in the Catholic calendar in 1960. Until then, it was a day in which people decorated the crosses of the dead and within the town in flowers and streamers. In later years they and other leaders petitioned the Pope and were able to keep their beloved holiday, in Mexico alone. Today it is not just about decorating the crosses in Mexico. It is also about honoring the men and women of the construction industries that helped save their cherished day…with blessings.
