Greenery Day is a national holiday in Japan originating from the celebration of Emperor Shōwa's birthday on April 29. In 1989 the name of the holiday was changed from "Birthday of the Emperor" to "Greenery Day". The day is celebrated as a reason for people to commune with nature. It also acknowledges the emperor's love for plants. In 2007 Greenery Day was moved to May 4 and April 29 was renamed to Shōwa Day.

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the ‘5th of May’, marks the anniversary of Mexican Army's entrenchment and ultimate victory in the city of Puebla against the French army in 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War. This conflict ran concurrent with the American Civil War (1860-1864) and lasted from 1861-1867. The French were ultimately defeated.

National Ferret Day occurs on this day every year in the United Kingdom. National Ferret Day seeks to ensure issues such as welfare, care, nutrition and ownership are all highlighted in a positive light and educate the public to respect the animal that we care so much about. Ferrets are work animals, hunting and eating rabbits, gophers and other garden pests. The term ‘Ferreting’ means using ferrets to hunt. They are cute, and mischievous pets (like mongooses) that live well with large pets (keep them away from rabbits, guinea pigs, small kittens/puppies and hamsters though). National Ferret Day is an opportunity to dispel myths and show the ferret to be both the traditional hard worker that it continues to be and also the excellent companion animal that it has become in more recent years. The Ferret Education & Research Trust (FERT) is the founding charity behind National Ferret Day in the UK. Its aim is to educate the public about the domesticated ferret, to ensure they are respected as working animals as well as companions. The Trust was disbanded in September 2013, but continues to support the Green Ribbon Campaign and National Ferret Day. People are encouraged to consult the British Veterinary Association Animal Welfare Foundation’s (BVA AWF) for more information about this event.

Hoagie Day, Ntl.: May 5*

The Hoagie Sandwich (also known as a submarine sandwich) is an American original and it first appeared in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. In 1992, then Mayor Ed Rendell declared it the "official sandwich of Philadelphia”. This initiated the official Wawa Hoagie Day at City Hall. Wawa is a regional convenience store chain. The hoagie is a built-to-order sandwich on a long Italian roll, typically filled with deli meat and cheese, garnished with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions and finished with a drizzle of oregano-vinegar dressing. Hoagies can also be filled with tuna, chicken cutlets and roasted vegetables, among other fillings. National Hoagie Sandwich Day is typically celebrated with hoagie shops providing free hoagie sandwiches to local law enforcement, firemen and other civil servants. The actual day of this promotion can vary. Wawa often holds it in June or July near the 4th of July, rather than on National Hoagie Day. Some stores will give hoagies to the first 50 or 100 customers on this day. The best way to celebrate? Eat a hoagie!

Midwife, International Day of the: May 5

International Day of the Midwife was created in 1991 by the International Confederation of Midwives and is currently observed in over 50 countries around the world. Today, 80% of those alive were born with the help of a midwife. In the United States, midwives attend approximately 10% of births in hospitals, birth centers and homes. Pregnancy and childbirth have an enormous impact on the health of women, newborns, and families, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socio-economically. The goal of the midwifery model of care is to support women and their families in the process of birthing their babies safely, unhindered and with confidence. Every woman deserves access to the high quality, safe, personalized, attentive, affordable, and respectful care of a midwife.

Whereas, according to a study commissioned by the Department of Justice, in some Tribal communities, American Indian women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average murder rate; Whereas, according to the most recently available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017, homicide was the sixth leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaska Native females between 1 and 44 years of age; Whereas little data exist on the number of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women in the United States; Whereas, on July 5, 2013, Hanna Harris, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, was reported missing by her family in Lame Deer, Montana; Whereas the body of Hanna Harris was found 5 days after she went missing; Whereas Hanna Harris was determined to have been raped and murdered, and the individuals accused of committing those crimes were convicted; Whereas the case of Hanna Harris is an example of many similar cases; and Whereas Hanna Harris was born on May 5, 1992: Now, therefore, be it That the Senate— (1)designates May 5, 2019, as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls; and (2)calls on the people of the United States and interested groups— (A)to commemorate the lives of missing and murdered American Indian and Alaska Native women whose cases are documented and undocumented in public records and the media; and (B)to demonstrate solidarity with the families of victims in light of those tragedies.
