International Donkey Day came about through the internationally known (27 countries) Donkey Sanctuary, founded in 1969 by Dr Elizabeth Svendsen in the United Kingdom. The mission of the organization is to provide a permanent home for rescue donkeys and mules experiencing ill health, maltreatment, abuse and poor living conditions. They also provide support for donkey and mule owners with services and information. International Donkey Day focuses on the need to care for these sturdy and essential work animals, educate the public, further research and encourage people to sponsor or adopt donkeys and mules in the nation of their choice. Donkey Sanctuary recommends observing this day by: a) Become a donkey ambassador! Learn about these amazing animals and share with family, friends. b) Be a responsible owner: donkeys’ live about 30 years and form strong attachments. Donkey parents are long-term parents. c) Pay attention if you ride or see work donkeys. Ganga Saptami (H): May 8

Ganga Saptami (Ganga Jayanti / Ganga Pujan) is devoted to the goddess Ganga who represents happiness, fame and salvation. If one is able to arise and bathe in the Ganges river on this day, that event is seen as highly auspicious. Garlands are floated upon the river and at sundown the Ganga Aarti, a devotional service in which wicks soaked in butter are placed in bowls, lit and offered to the gods. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon and stars. National Prevention Week first organized in 2011 to allow schools to take part in a drug prevention-themed event before the school year ends, raising awareness in students of all ages. The percentages of marijuana, cigarette and alcohol initiates among youth increase between spring (April and May) and summer (June and July,) and the timing of National Prevention Week helps to educate young people and their families at this crucial time of year. World Red Cross, Red Crescent Day honors the birthday of Henry Dunant, May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The International Federation of the Red Crescent Society was created in 1919 and operates within the Islamic world. The two organizations coordinate together, use the efforts of over 97 million volunteers and are governed by International Humanitarian Law to protect human life, alleviate suffering and provide life saving and emergency care worldwide.

National Transportation Week recognizes our nation's transportation infrastructure and the men and women who build, maintain, and utilize it. In 1957. by joint resolution Congress requested the President designate the third Friday in May of each year as 'National Defense Transportation Day,' and, by joint resolution approved May 14, 1962, as amended (36 United States. C. 133), that the week during which that Friday falls be designated as 'National Transportation Week'. Roads, bridges, and ports, these are the transportation networks essential to making the United States the best place in the world to do business. Repairing our transportation networks is about economic growth and security. Good roads ensure first responders can respond effectively during crisis. That means protecting our critical infrastructure and repairing roads and bridges that put our people at risk. Together, we can make meaningful progress toward those goals. Truman Day celebrates the birthday of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States. Born May 8, 1884, he served as a Senator from Missouri, as Vice President, and following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, as President of the United States during the last months of the World War II. He was the Commander-in-Chief that made the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. President Truman died on December 26, 1972.
