Black Mothers Bailout Week: May 2-8

First run in 2017, Black Mothers Bailout, now known as the National Bail Out, is a nationwide campaign to bail out as many mothers as possible awaiting trial and in jail simply because they cannot afford bail. They are freed so they can spend Mother's Day with their children. The impact on families and communities is extreme. Jobs and incomes are lost, homes are lost and families are divided. These women haven't been convicted of anything, only arrested. Under United States law, each is presumed innocent. Yet, they sit in jail because they do not have the financial resources to pay bail. It can take months to go to trial; many of these women risk losing their children as well, simply because they cannot afford bail. This event seeks to raise awareness of the National Bail Fund, and encourages donations to help free these women until they have the opportunity of a fair trial.

Blessing of the Bikes: May 2

Motorcycles are a popular form of transportation throughout the world and come with their own romantic ideals. Each year since 1969, thousands of bikers gather at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, New Jersey, to receive a blessing for the upcoming summer season. Granted by the Bishop, it places a blessing of safety on the bikes, riders and their friends. The Blessing of the Bikes is a Mass and ceremony held on the first Sunday in May.

Blood Pressure Month, Ntl.: May

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month. One of three American adults has high blood pressure, also called hypertension. That's 67 million people who have to work to keep their blood pressure in check each day. Unfortunately, more than half of people with high blood pressure do not have their condition under control. Blood pressure is considered normal when systolic pressure (the higher number) is less than 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure (the lower number) is less than 80 mmHg. People at risk for high blood pressure, often called prehypertension, have systolic pressure between 120 and 139 mmHg or diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg. High blood pressure means systolic pressure is 140 mmHg or higher or diastolic is 90 mmHg or higher. Talk with your health care team about your personal blood pressure goal.

Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month: May

Borderline personality disorder (BPD), marked by the inability to manage emotions, is a serious mental illness affecting nearly 6% of the population, that’s millions of people worldwide. Symptoms generally first occur in adolescence or early adulthood, and they can be present in familial relationships, business relationships or both. Signs of BPD include impulsiveness, reckless behavior and an inability to maintain healthy relationships. BPD often compounds other issues including depression, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders. BPD Month is an opportunity to learn about this mental illness, how to best interact with persons suffering and learn about techniques for managing it.

Promoted by the National Brain Tumor Society, Brain Tumor Action Month raises awareness about brain tumors and provides the means for treatment, support and early detection. Annually, brain tumors are discovered in nearly 200,000 Americans. Particularly in children, a brain tumor is considered the most deadly type of cancer. Within 20-39 year olds, brain tumors represent the third most dangerous cancer.

National Building Safety Month has been an annual event since 1980 and was officially proclaimed by President Obama in 2011. The following is from that Presidential Proclamation: "Building safety is a critical component of our homeland security, our personal and public safety, the protection of property, and our economic well-being. While disasters have had devastating and heartbreaking effects in our country and around the world, modern building safety standards and fire prevention codes help us withstand, mitigate, and rapidly recover from hurricanes, winter storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods. It is our collective responsibility as a Nation—nonprofit organizations and the public and private sectors—to implement effective standards and codes that sustain safe and resilient structures. National Good Car Keeping Month occurs each May and is a reminder to Americans to prepare their cars for the summer driving. Key tips include radiator flushes, rotating tires and checking the pressure, replacing break pads if needed, replacing windshield wipers, wiper fluid and getting an oil change. Car owners are urged to keep a fire extinguisher in their cars, window cleaner and paper towels (bugs tend to cloud windshields quickly in rural areas during the summer). Recommended as well, an extra gallon of water for radiators and an extra quart of oil as a safety precaution. This event is initiated by the advertising agency Sander Allen Advertising.
