Tuba Day, Intl.: May 6

The first Friday of May each year is the International Tuba Day. Joel Day created International Tuba Day in 1979 whilst still a student at Philadelphia's Lower Merion High School. As one of only two tuba players in the band, and getting very little respect from his fellow bandmates, he created a day to recognize all tuba players as the musicians they are. He later attended Millersville University. Dr. Sy Brandon, formerly of Millersville University, completed two books for International Tuba Day, including American Folk and international musical arrangements for the tuba.

Auctioneers Day, Ntl: May 7

The week, which will again feature a daily morning encouragement and reminder email from NAA leaders, will look like this: National Auctioneers Week and National Auctioneers Day (on Saturday) celebrate the Auctioneering profession and seek to educate the public on auctions. Each day has a different theme leading up to the last day celebrating the profession. Toolkits are available on the National Auctioneers Association Website. Daily themes during the week are: “Logo Monday” – Post the NAA Logo as your social media profile pic. Write a post about how excited you are that it is National Auctioneers Week. Tag it with #AuctionsWork and #NAAPro! “Teach ‘em Tuesday” – Highlight your commitment to continuing education as an NAA member and how your commitment puts the “Pro” in #NAAPro! Also, if it applies to you, take this opportunity to explain your designations. Tell people what those letters behind your name mean! “Walk The Talk Wednesday” – As an auction professional, you are an advocate for your community in many ways. Posting photos of you and your elected officials is always important, but this year, you also can clearly explain your community advocacy efforts and value through an NAA-supplied social media post! “Banner Success Thursday” – Show your clients love! Post photos and videos of your clients holding your “Success with our #NAAPro!” sign. Social media post: #AuctionsWork when facilitated by an #NAAPro! “Philanthropy Friday” – Nearly every auction professional is involved in his or her community’s philanthropic activities in some way, and an NAA member’s time, effort, and fundraising abilities are often sought after. Now, you can highlight your involvement and bring awareness to the groups you help throughout the year! Tag them in a post and tell your stories of how #AuctionsWork for so many great causes. “Celebration Saturday” – It’s National Auctioneers Day! Let’s honor your clients and customers by sharing a heartfelt message to them on your page. NAA will supply you with an example! And, cap off your post with a call to action or invitation to an upcoming auction, to do business, or to tour your auction company. Open those doors!

Birth Mother's Day: May 7

Mary Jean Wolch-Marsh first conceived of the idea of Birth Mother’s Day as a result of her own adoption experience. She knew she was a mother, but didn't feel recognized as such, either by those around her or by her daughter's parents. Remembering the feelings she'd experienced at her daughter's birth - feelings of triumph and euphoria - she used these to help in her own healing. Birth Mother's Day brings acknowledgement and recognition to every birth mother who ever loved a child lost to adoption. For birth mothers, this observance can be a time to affirm joys and acknowledge the sorrow, grief, and pain that are a part of many experiences. It can also be a time to break the silence and release years of anguish, worry, shame, or guilt. The purpose of Marsh's Birth Mother's Day ceremony is insight, affirmation, growth and wisdom. Whether you choose to recognize your own, others', or all birthmothers on Mother's Day and/or Birth Mother's Day, there are many different ways to do so: Way’s to Celebrate Attend a Ceremony. Birth Mother's Day ceremonies may be organized by support groups, adoption agencies and other local groups. Black Pound Day (UK): May 7

Born in 2020 in the wake of the Black Lives Matter global protest, Black Pound Day in the United Kingdom is a monthly event occurring on the first Saturday of each month (except the first day, which was held in June 2020). Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, Ntl: May 7

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day occurs each year on the Thursday in Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. This promotion seeks to raise awareness about the importance of children’s mental health and demonstrate that positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development from birth. This is a nationwide event which occurs on a local level. The date may vary from state-to-state and city-to-city. Though nationally declared, state governors and city mayors may declare their region’s awareness day on a different date.

Cystinosis Awareness Day: May 7

Cystinosis Awareness Day first ran in 2018. This annual event seeks to raise awareness about the disease and raise funds to find a cure. From the Cystinosis Research Network: “Cystinosis is a rare genetic, metabolic, lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the CTNS gene on chromosome 17p13 which results in an abnormal accumulation of the amino acid cystine in various organs and tissues of the body such as the kidneys, eyes, muscles, pancreas and brain. The cystine accumulation causes widespread tissue and organ damage. Cystine accumulation can lead to kidney failure, muscle wasting, swallowing difficulty, diabetes, hypothyroidism, cerebral atrophy, photophobia, blindness, corneal ulceration, ventilatory impairment and more. Without treatment, children with cystinosis will usually develop end stage kidney failure or die prematurely. If cystinosis patients receive a kidney transplant, their new kidney will not be affected by the disease. However, without specific treatment, cystine accumulation can cause complications in other organs of the body.”

Dog owners and their four-legged friends are encouraged to enjoy the springtime weather in safe, off-leash areas in their communities by celebrating National Dog Park Day. Dog owners simply need to visit their local dog parks, (aka Bark Parks) and enjoy the day. This event also raises funds and awareness for the non-profit 'Bark for Your Park' each year. This event first ran in 2017.
