Festival of Saint Efisio (IT): May 1-4

Believed to be a miracle, in the 1650s, the city of Cagliari in Sardinia, Italy, somehow managed to escape the plague sweeping Europe. Locals believe it was the intervention of Saint Efisio. In1656 a vow was made to honor the third century Saint. Since 1657, the city has held a festival during the first days of May, including a parade covering 65 km, period costumes, music and entertainment, as a commemoration of the event. Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month: May

Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month occurs in May each year. It was started by California- based National Fibromyalgia Association. Today it is supported by the Pharmacists Planning Service. Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain disorder that affects an estimated 10 million people in the U.S. and an estimated 3-6% of the world’s population. While fibromyalgia (FM) can also occur in men and children of all ethnic groups, 75-90% of those that have this disorder are women. Those with fibromyalgia experience chronic widespread body pain as well as moderate to extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties. Often they are sensitive to touch, light and sound and can develop irritable bowel syndrome, lupus and arthritis. This month is about focusing awareness on fibromyalgia and creating increased understanding of the disease and the struggles its victims deal with on a daily basis.

Flu Season Begins, Southern: May 1

Today marks the official beginning of the flu season south of the Equator. Fortunately for you, it’s nowhere near as bad in the South as it is in the North. Lucky you, Australia, Brazil and your temperate neighbors. s The World Health Organization has reported that influenza activity has continued to decline in all temperate countries of the southern hemisphere, while influenza-like illness has started to increase in many European countries. Of course, that doesn’t mean you get off Scott-free. The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) has adopted WHO recommendations for the composition for the influenza seasonal vaccine. Influenza activity peaks at the end of August in most areas of Australia and Tasmania. The Northern Territory experiences a late peak, while Western Australia reports increased activity from mid-August through September.愀

Food Allergy Research & Education, Inc. (FARE) created Food Allergy Awareness Week in 1998 to educate the public about food allergies, a potentially life-threatening medical condition. Beginning May 2014, the entire month of May as has been designated as Food Allergy Action Month. This is a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on food allergies and anaphylaxis. There are many relatively easy ways you can get involved in raising awareness, educating others and inspiring action.

Gardening for Wildlife Month: May

The National Wildlife Federation’s Annual Garden for Wildlife Month offers home gardeners, wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists a chance to join together with millions of their peers across the nation and help support species in their backyards.

“From butterflies to birds and everything in between, species are facing unprecedented threats to their survival. Garden for Wildlife Month offers Americans a critical way they can support wildlife in their locality” said Mary Phillips, senior director of the Garden for Wildlife program. “We at the National Wildlife Federation are inspired by the millions who are making simple changes to their outdoor spaces — from whole landscaped areas to a few planters — to support pollinators, birds and other wildlife. You can make a difference when you plant with purpose.”

An estimated 7 million people are expected to participate in Garden for Wildlife this year, with highest participation levels during May, Garden for Wildlife Month — making it the nation’s largest and longest-running effort dedicated to helping wildlife locally. In the United States alone, a million acres a year are engulfed by expanding urban and suburban development. Taylor Morrison, a leading homebuilder and developer, is Garden for Wildlife’s newest partner, teaming up with National Wildlife Federation to restore and protect wildlife habitat in the homebuilder’s communities nationwide while engaging staff, residents and the public in accessible and effective wildlife restoration efforts.

Haitian Heritage Month: May

May is Haitian Heritage Month, a time to remember the unity reached by the Black and Mulatto officers at their historic congress on May 15-18, 1803 to fight together against slavery in the French colony of St. Domingue, and for its independence, which they proclaimed on January 1, 1804. May was chosen for a number of reasons: a) To celebrate the creation of the blue and red Haitian flag on May 18, 1803. b) To honor Haitian General Toussaint Louverture who was born on May 20 1743. c) To celebrate Haitian achievements and contributions across the globe. d) To raise awareness and understanding about Haitian culture and traditions. e) To strengthen the self-esteem of Haitian/Haitian American youth. f) To honor Haitian tradition of celebrating: The month of May as Mary's, the mother of Jesus (Haitian Catholics) May 1st as Labor and Agriculture Day May 17 as Teachers Day May 18 as University Day Last Sunday of May as Mothers Day This month is a great chance to discover the rich diversity of the Haitian culture, its people and its history.

Hamburger Month, Ntl.: May

May is National Hamburger Month, most likely since it is also National Barbecue Month and the official kickoff to the grilling season. The Library of Congress states the first hamburger sold in America was in 1900 by Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant and restaurateur in New Haven, Connecticut. White Castle hamburger chain states the hamburger is the invention of Otto Kuase of Hamburg, Germany. Who actually created the ground meat sandwich may never be known. Lassen is given official credit by the US government because the first sale can be proved. What is known is that in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, the humble hamburger sandwich caught the attention of the New York Tribune, gaining it instant celebrity in American culture. Later, Roy Kroc would make the hamburger the definition of fast food and make it affordable to the masses. During both World Wars, due to Germany being the enemy, restaurants referred to the beef patties as Salisbury steak, which is a hamburger patty without the buns drenched in gravy. Regardless of what you want to call it, enjoy your burger this month in style.

Hedgehog Awareness Week (UK): May 1-7

Hedgehog Awareness Week falls on April 30-May 6. Being organized all over the country by British Hedgehog Preservation Society, this event highlights the problems faced by hedgehogs. People are encouraged to do at least one positive thing for hedgehog such as providing access to the garden, and reducing the use of pesticides and poison, among others. People can also get free hedgehog stickers from BHPS, organize local events such as cake sales, and give information how to help hedgehogs. Using the hashtag #hedgehogweek on social media platforms is also encouraged.
