First run in 2007, Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is one of a handful of events created by book authors after the release of their books. This particular event derives from the book Stinky the Bulldog by Jackie Valent. Bulldogs are one of the more recognizable breeds and often typecast as guard dog, which is amusing when you realize they are also one of the friendliest breeds. Their original purpose was as work dogs helping ranchers and butchers control livestock and they're believed to have originated in England as far back as the 400s AD. Weighing up to 120 pounds with a low center of gravity, they were especially adept at controlling bulls, ergo, bulldog.

National Cancer Control Month was created by joint congressional and presidential decree March 28, 1938 (52 Stat. 148; 36 U.S.C. 103). It is renewed annually by the President. Each year an estimated half million Americans will lose their lives to cancer, and three times that many will be diagnosed with this devastating illness. Federally funded research has brought about landmark advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment that promise real change for the millions of Americans facing this disease. Sophisticated analysis continues to shed light on the molecular basis of cancer and unlock new therapies. Innovative studies are paving the way for effective treatments to deadly cancers, including melanoma. And new research shows that screening procedures can reduce mortality from lung cancer, which could save lives among those at greatest risk. Canine Fitness Month aims to change that by getting pets and owners out and moving. The easiest game of course is 'fetch'.
