One of the most famous monsters of our times, Frankenstein, is the story of a mad scientist who brings the dead back to life, only to discover that he has created a monster. Frankenstein continues to be one of our most popular and endearing horror stories. Thus, it seems suitable that Frankenstein Friday is celebrated each year on the Friday before Halloween, the most significant masquerade in the country! Not many people know this, but a teenager wrote Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was only 16 when she ran away with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Over the next two years, she gave birth to two children. In 1816, the couple traveled to Switzerland and visited Lord Byron at Villa Diodati. While there, 18-year-old Mary started writing Frankenstein, which was published in 1818 when she was 20.

It authorized the procurement, fitting, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. Navy Day originated with the Navy League and marks the anniversary of its founding in 1922. The day gives recognition to the naval service and those serving it.

Chocolate Day, Ntl.: October 28

National Chocolate Day is one of several chocolate days on the calendar, including World Chocolate Day on July 7 and International Chocolate Day marks the birthday of Milton S. Hershey (September 13, 1857), the founder of The Hershey Chocolate Company in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Chocolate beans have been used since around 1900 BC by the people of Central America, usually as a bitter drink, alcoholic, or with red peppers. (It is quite a treat if you’ve never tried hot chocolate with red peppers using hot water instead of milk!)

On his fourth voyage, Christopher Columbus brought this delicious bean to Europe. He noted the encounter in his ship’s log on August 15, 1502.

A few decades later, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés would bring the bean back in bulk (he was only 17 when Columbus found it).

But in its Central American form, it wasn’t the sweet treat we see today. That required several inventions:

John Baker’s process of grounding cocoa beans between millstones to create a powder in 1764 turned it into a spice.

Conrad Van Houten developed a method for extracting cacao liquor from the fat in the cocoa bean in 1828, which made chocolate affordable.

And finally, the development of conching by Swiss chocolatier Rodolphe Lindt in 1879 made it into candy.

The rest is sweet history.

There are several different types of cocoa beans. Though native to the Americas, nearly two-thirds of cocoa production today occurs in Africa, and Ivory Coast is the largest producer.

Drug Take Back Day, Ntl.: October 28*

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic, and why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - a record amount of prescription drugs.

The DEA sponsors a Drug Take Back Day each April and October to make disposal of expired or no longer needed medications safe and easy. To find a collection site near you, use the Collection Site Locator available here:

Social media and community promotion assets are free on the event champion's website. National Take Back Day is held on the last Saturday in April and October. It began in 2016.

Lunar Eclipse (Partial): October 28

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow and appears to go dark. Eclipses can occur one to three times a year and fall into the following categories:

Partial—A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through a portion of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, covering a part of the Moon, giving a reddish-brown hue to the side shadowed by the Earth.

Penumbral—A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow, also known as the penumbra, dimming its intensity and giving it a gray or brownish color.

Total—A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon as it passes in front of the Sun. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon appears reddish-brown. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can watch a lunar eclipse with the naked eye.

Maharishi Valmiki's Birthday (H): October 28

Today celebrates the birth of Maharishi Valmiki, a poet and philosopher. The actual date and year of his birth, some time between 400 and 100 BCE, is unknown. Valmiki is the father of Sanskrit literature, having written the epic "Ramayana." He is believed to have invented shloka, the first verse or epic metre, which set the base and defined the form of Sanskrit poetry.
