Platelets Day, Sport Purple for: September 25

06:20 AM | -
Sport Purple for Platelets Day is a part of the National ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura) Awareness campaign. _______________ “ITP, immune thrombocytopenia (also known as immune or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) is an autoimmune disease. In autoimmune diseases, the body mounts an immune attack on one or more seemingly ordinary organ systems. In ITP, platelets are the target, marked as foreign by the immune system and eliminated in the spleen, the liver, and other means. In addition to increased platelet destruction, some people with ITP also have impaired platelet production. An average platelet count is between 150,000 and 400,000/microliter of blood. If someone has a platelet count lower than 100,000/microliter of blood with no other reason for low platelets, that person is considered to have ITP.1 There is no accurate, definitive test to diagnose ITP.” Platelet Disorder Support Association ____________________ ITP can occur in children and adults. This day is about raising awareness about the condition and the people living with it. Wear purple today, and tell people why you are doing so.

Play Days: September 8-12

06:20 AM | -
Americans are severely starved for vacation days, with just seven paid holidays a year. A month off or longer is expected in Europe and most of the world. When this writer worked in the Middle East, I had 53 days off a year. Those were the days. But I digress. No matter. Play Days expands the Labor Day Weekend through the following weekend. It's a chance to laugh and play like ten years olds, and life can return to normal the following week. Enjoy!

Poisoned Blackberries Day (Michaelmas)(C): September 29

06:20 AM | -
Poisoned Blackberries Day is an anniversary marking the conquest of good over evil. According to medieval lore, blackberries symbolize lawyers and justice. But why poisoned, and does it have anything to do with lawyers? September 29 in the Gregorian Calendar is Michaelmas. During the Middle Ages, Christians celebrated with a feast with roast goose to commemorate the victory of archangel Michael over Lucifer. In the Bible, the archangel Michael battled against the devil in heaven and won. Poisoned Blackberry day marks the anniversary of the day God threw Satan out of heaven, and he landed on a thorny blackberry bush. Furious, Satan spits on the blackberries, poisoning the entire crop for a day. Spoiling the fruit was a bit of a problem. Michaelmas was the "due date" for the completion of the harvest and marked the end of the third quarter in the Christian calendar. Additional quarter-end dates include Lady Day (March 25), Midsummer (June 24), and Christmas (December 25). Michael, representing God's good, battled the devil and won, delivering justice over his evil deeds. Civically, there is an additional tie to the legal profession. Michaelmas marks the commencement of legal and university terms, and it signaled the election of public servants to the office and a time for hiring.

Police Cooperation, Intl. Day of: September 7

06:20 AM | -
The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/77/241 dated 10 January 2023, has designated 7th September as the International Day of Police Cooperation, starting in 2023. The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and acknowledged the various resolutions that encourage cooperation between the UN and international organizations, which contributes to better coordination and coherence among police and law enforcement institutions. The Assembly also noted the efforts of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Policing in providing technical assistance to Member States in the fight against all forms of transnational organized crime. The resolution emphasized the need for international cooperation to strengthen various areas related to preventing and combating transnational crime, particularly organized crime, and countering terrorism. It also acknowledged disparities in policing capabilities among Member States and called for international cooperation on capacity-building, technical assistance, gender mainstreaming, and human rights respect.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day (AU): September 4

06:20 AM | -
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about this genetic disease. As a person ages, symptoms worsen, and fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects 1 in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.

PORTHCAWL'S ELVIS EXTRAVAGANZA ROCKS EUROPE'S COASTLINE Each September, the seaside town of Porthcawl transforms into "Elvisville," hosting the Porthcawl Elvis Festival, regarded as the largest Elvis tribute festival in Europe—possibly even the world. Porthcawl's charm lies in its joyful absurdity—a small Welsh town taken over by Elvismania. The festival was conceived in 2004 by local entertainer and promoter Peter Phillips. His intent was simple: rescue the historic Grand Pavilion from threatened closure by giving it a purpose. He proposed an award show for Elvis tribute artists, thinking it would pull in crowds and attention—and it did. What began as a modest gathering of around 500 fans evolved into a full-blown cultural institution. Phillips credits the festival's longevity to its balance: "getting the quality of the music right at one end and not taking it too seriously at the other end and just making a party of it." Crowds swell to around 40,000 annually, with fans and tribute artists traveling from around the globe. The festival features a professional competition where contestants—known as Elvis Tribute Artists (ETAs)—are judged on voice, moves, stage presence, and costume, vying to be crowned the best in Porthcawl. The town itself becomes one giant stage: pubs, cafés, and hotels host mini-performances; the streets fill with Elvis impersonators in full regalia; there are contests like Young Elvis and even a "Hound Dog" best-dressed-dog parade. One minister even hosted a church service as Elvis—in Welsh. The festival also spotlights rising stars—like Emilio Santoro, a Brit who first competed at 13, and was later crowned "best Elvis in the world." The event now injects millions of pounds into the local economy, with estimates around £6 million annually. ABOUT ELVIS PRESLEY Elvis Aaron Presley (1935–1977), born in Tupelo, Mississippi, rose from humble beginnings to become the "King of Rock' n' Roll." His breakthrough came with Sun Records in Memphis in 1954, and his dynamic blend of gospel, blues, country, and pop—coupled with his charisma and signature moves—redefined popular music. Hits like "That's All Right (Mama)" made him a teen idol; movies and television followed. He passed away at Graceland in 1977, but his musical legacy remains unmatched.

Prairie Day (US-MO):September 12

06:20 AM | -
The Prairie Day festival is held annually at George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Missouri. It features live examples, food, and crafts typical to prairie life in the United States in the 1880s, a period in which Carver was a child. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.
