Revolutionary War Ends (US)(1783): September 3

06:20 AM | -
On September 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially ended with the signing of the Paris Treaty of 1783. Also known as the War of Independence, it was a conflict between 13 North American colonies and the British Crown. The war started with skirmishes between militiamen and the British troops in Lexington and Concord in 1775 before becoming a war by the following summer. Colonial troops received aid from the French Army, turning the conflict from a civil war into an international war. Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, was the decisive battle. However, active hostilities did not cease until April 15, 1783. In September, the English and American governments signed the treaty ending the conflict. The treaty defined the sovereignty of the United States, bounded by Canada in the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the West.

September is the Reye's Syndrome Awareness Month. Reye's Syndrome is a rapidly progressive encephalopathy. Symptoms include vomiting, personality changes, confusion, seizures, and a loss of consciousness. Reye's Syndrome is a severe medical condition that needs immediate treatment, and responding is the key to full recovery. The main problem is that healthcare professionals have very little awareness of the serious disease. Hospitals and other healthcare sector providers are urged to schedule activities for Reye's Syndrome Awareness Month.

Rishi Panchami (H): September 15

06:20 AM | -
Rishi Panchami is a female fasting day in the Hindu faith designed to purify a woman. Hinduism considers menstruation unclean, and women during their monthly cycle are not permitted to enter the kitchen to cook, participate in religious activities or even touch family members. If a woman fails to follow these rules at any time, she creates an unpure state called Rajaswala Dosha. This fasting day atones for this unpure state, thus allowing her to become pure again. Rishi Panchami always comes two days after Hartalika Teej (a day for the celebration of matrimony) and a day after Ganesh Chaturthi, the birthday of Lord Ganesh. It falls in August or September. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

RMS Titanic Located (1985): September 1

06:20 AM | -
Today is the anniversary of the discovery of the RMS Titanic wreckage. On September 1, 1985, the wreck of the RMS Titanic was located about 600 km south-southeast of Newfoundland under 3,800 meters of ocean. A French-American expedition team spearheaded by Jean Louis Michel and Robert Ballard discovered the key to finding the Titanic was a remote-controlled machine called Argo. The wreckage has two main parts about 600 meters apart. The stern has deteriorated but is still recognizable. The ship's midsection broke and scattered across the seabed. The debris plane is littered with personal belongings of passengers, furniture, and machinery from the ship. The bow remains relatively intact. Before this discovery, numerous attempts were made to locate the famous wreck. Though located, attempts to bring it to the surface have been unsuccessful due to the advanced fragility of the remains.

People eat food full of symbolism, including honey-dipped apples and light candles in the evening. Prayers are said, and people abstain from creative activities and work. Jewish religious holidays commence and end at sundown on the days listed. Rosh Hashanah is a national holiday in Israel. PLEASE NOTE: All Hebrew calendar months begin and end at sundown. 06:20 AM | -
RULE OF LAW MONTH IN THE PHILIPPINES: UPHOLDING JUSTICE AND EQUALITY The Philippines observes Rule of Law Month, a time dedicated to promoting the importance of justice, equality, and adherence to the legal framework that governs the nation. Spearheaded by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and supported by various legal institutions, educational establishments, and civil society organizations, this month-long campaign seeks to underscore the fundamental principles that sustain democracy and societal order. The primary aim of Rule of Law Month is to enhance public understanding and appreciation of the rule of law as the cornerstone of a democratic society. Activities and programs throughout the month focus on educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities, promoting transparency and accountability in governance, and encouraging active participation in the legal and justice systems. DEFINING THE RULE OF LAW The rule of law is a principle under which all members of society, including those in government, are equally subject to publicly disclosed legal codes and processes. It ensures that laws are applied uniformly and fairly, protecting individuals from arbitrary actions by the state. Central to this concept are the ideas of legal equality, fairness, justice, and the supremacy of law. IMPORTANCE OF OBSERVING THE RULE OF LAW Observing the rule of law is crucial for several reasons: Protecting Rights and Liberties—It safeguards individual freedoms and human rights, ensuring all are treated equally before the law. Ensuring Justice and Fairness—It provides mechanisms for resolving disputes impartially and maintaining social order and stability. Promoting Accountability—It holds government officials and institutions accountable for their actions, preventing abuse of power. Encouraging Economic Development—A stable legal environment fosters economic growth by providing businesses with predictable and reliable regulations. ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS Throughout September, various activities highlight the importance of the rule of law. These include: Educational Campaigns—Schools and universities host seminars, workshops, and debates to discuss legal principles and their applications. Community Outreach—Legal aid clinics and public forums provide free legal advice and increase legal awareness among the general populace. Advocacy and Awareness Drives—Media campaigns, public service announcements, and social media initiatives aim to spread awareness about the significance of the rule of law. Recognition and Awards—The IBP and other organizations recognize individuals and groups who have significantly contributed to upholding the rule of law in the Philippines. By dedicating a month to these efforts, the Philippines reaffirms its commitment to building a society grounded in justice, equality, and respect for the law. The Rule of Law Month is a reminder that a just and fair society is essential for the nation's progress and prosperity.

Running of the Balls (US-TN): September

06:20 AM | -
The Running of the Balls in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, United States, is an annual month-long fundraiser by Outdoor Gravity Park for charity in May and September. Teams sign up during these months to be chased downhill by a giant manned zorb. One team member rolls down a hill inside a giant transparent inflated ball called a zorb, chasing, knocking, and running over friends and family. It's like the running of the bulls without the horns and injuries, with all proceeds going to support the local food bank. Zorbing traces its origins back to New Zealand, where entrepreneurs Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers launched it as a commercial venture in 1995 after watching hamster balls. They sought a new adrenaline-charged activity that included a unique way to appreciate New Zealand's hilly landscapes. "Zorbing" soon became the generic term for this spherical thrill ride. It involves using an inflatable, transparent, double-sectioned ball, also known as a zorb, with one ball inside the other. The air between the two balls acts as a shock absorber for the rider, cushioning them as they tumble head over heels down a hill. The sport expanded rapidly in New Zealand, followed by international interest. By the early 2000s, zorbing locations emerged in various adventure tourism hotspots worldwide, including Europe, the United States, Australia, and Asia. A water-based version called hydro-zorbing soon appeared. In this rendition, a bucket of water is added to the inner orb, creating a human washing machine experience as the rider sloshes around during the descent. Zorbing has since moved into soccer, bowling, and other sports, with comedic results. The Guinness World Records acknowledged zorbing's popularity in 2006 by noting the longest Zorb ride ever recorded. Steve Camp of Canada rolled down a hill in a zorb for an impressive 570 meters (1,870 ft).

Sabra and Shatila Massacre (LB/IL/PS)(1982): September 16

06:20 AM | -
Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre of 1982, which killed 3,000 people, and wounded thousands more over 48 hours. It was a continuation of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon that began on June 6, 1982. The Sabra neighborhood and Shatila refugee camp rest in West Beirut, Lebanon. They were and continue to be home to a large population of Palestinian Christian and Muslim refugees, many of whom fled the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Jewish terrorist groups in 1948 and the Israeli military attack in 1967. To this day, Palestinian refugees do not have permanent status in Lebanon, despite up to 75 years of residency. The massacre began at 18:00 local time on September 16, 1982, following the Israeli seizure of West Beirut. Right-wing Lebanese Christian Phalange forces, operating under the direction of Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon and Israeli military commanders, swarmed the neighborhood with guns, knives, and other weapons. The operation proceeded, massacring men, women, and children in the streets, their homes, hospitals, and the stadium. Israeli forces, bolstered by the militia, prevented terrified civilians from fleeing. In further depravity, the Israeli military lit the killing fields each night by filling the air with flares and artificial light to facilitate the killing. The streets literally ran with blood. The massacre received swift and severe international condemnation. The UN General Assembly voted unanimously (with 12 abstentions) to pass a resolution that the Sabra and Shatila massacre constituted "an act of genocide." Genocide is a war crime. Sharon, now a war criminal, was forced to resign as Israeli Defense Minister following the massacre. Israel's Kahan Commission concluded he was personally responsible for the genocide and that the military was aware of it and chose to allow it. The admonishment would be temporary. In 2001, Israel's citizens elected Sharon Prime Minister, and the General directing forces during the massacre, Amos Yaron, would become the Director-General of the Israel Defense Forces. The atrocities committed at Sabra and Shatila continue to traumatize its survivors. Decades later, the painful memories of the massacre persist, and reparations have never been made. The tactics used on Sabra and Shatilla continue every few years in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, both still under Israeli occupation. _____

Safe Abortion Day, Intl: September 28

06:20 AM | -
International Save Abortion Day on September 28 has been a regional campaign for decriminalizing abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean for over twenty years before being taken on by SRHR activists in 2011. The campaign was formerly known as the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. As of 2022, the fight for the decriminalization of abortion includes the United States. In June of 2022, the Supreme Court ruled states can make their laws without regard to the US constitution. Over a dozen states have made abortion a crime, dissolving fifty years of a woman's right to choose.
