Pratipada Shraddha (H): September 30

06:20 AM | -
Today Hindus mark Pratipada Shraddha. Pratipada Shraddha is a ritual for deceased family members who died on Pratipada Tithi, including Shukla and Krishna Paksha Pratipada. Special ceremonies are reserved for people who die on Tithi. At that time, the moon is weak; therefore, it cannot provide the deceased with its auspicious blessings for their journey upon death. Pratipada Shraddha is also known as Padwa Shraddha. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Premios Juventud: September 24

06:20 AM | -
PREMIOS JUVENTUD: CELEBRATING YOUNG LATINO TALENT Premios Juventud, an annual awards show, has celebrated young talent in the Latin music and entertainment industry since its inception in 2004. Organized by the Spanish-language television network Univision, this event honors achievements in music, film, sports, fashion, and pop culture, focusing on youth-oriented categories. The awards show is typically held in July, and it is designed to recognize and amplify the voices and talents of young Latinos. Its timing in mid-summer aligns with the school vacation period in many countries, maximizing its accessibility to its target youthful audience. The event takes place over the course of one evening, featuring a dynamic mix of live performances, celebrity appearances, and award presentations. Premios Juventud stands out for its interactive nature, offering fans the unique opportunity to vote for their favorite nominees across various categories. This active engagement fosters a strong connection between the audience and their beloved stars, making the event a highly anticipated and engaging experience each year. Univision, a major player in the Spanish-language media market, is the driving force behind Premios Juventud. The network leverages its extensive reach and influence to produce a show that entertains and serves as a platform for emerging artists and cultural influencers. By spotlighting the achievements and potential of young Latinos, Premios Juventud contributes to the broader narrative of Latin excellence and representation in the entertainment industry. The show’s format is a captivating blend of glamour and talent. It kicks off with the red carpet arrivals, where stars showcase their fashion choices, adding a glamorous dimension to the event. The main ceremony is a dynamic mix of award presentations and performances, often highlighting contemporary trends and issues that resonate with the youth demographic. Premios Juventud is more than just an awards show; it is a celebration of Latin culture, talent, and the future of entertainment. Each edition reaffirms Univision’s commitment to nurturing and showcasing young Latino voices, ensuring that the vibrancy and diversity of Latin youth continue to be recognized and celebrated on a grand stage.

Protect Education from Attack, Intl. Day to: September 9

06:20 AM | -
Children worldwide are being endangered by ongoing conflicts that blatantly disregard the fundamental rule of war: the protection of children. These protracted conflicts are damaging entire generations' futures, depriving children of the education they need to be valuable contributors to their societies and economies in the future. The safeguarding of a child's right to education in conflict zones necessitates the protection of education itself. Education can be life-saving, providing a safe haven for children from abuse, exploitation, and recruitment by armed forces. It is a critical factor in breaking the cycle of crisis and reducing the chances of future conflicts. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously agreed to establish a day to raise awareness of the millions of children living in conflict-ridden countries. The State of Qatar presented the resolution that proclaimed the day, with 62 countries co-sponsoring it. The resolution asserts that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure all learners, particularly those in vulnerable situations, have access to inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels. It also underscores the need for increased efforts and funding to establish safe and protective school environments during humanitarian crises. UNESCO and UNICEF, in collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system, will facilitate the annual observance of the day. These UN entities have long been helping Member States strengthen their capacity to provide access to quality educational opportunities for all in times of crisis.

Puppy Mill Awareness Day: September 19

06:20 AM | -
The ASPCA defines a puppy mill "as a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the wellbeing of its dogs—who are often severely neglected—and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices." Puppy mills differ from accredited breeders who give their animals complete care. Puppy mills became prevalent after World War II when regular food crops were challenging to grow, and promoting puppies became profitable. Female dogs become impregnated at every opportunity in a puppy mill with little recovery time between litters. Once they are physically depleted and can no longer reproduce, they're usually killed. Puppy Mill Awareness Day is about ending the practice of mass breeding for a profit with little or no care for the animal's wellbeing.
