Feast of the Redeemer (IT)(1577): July 15

In 1575, a plague ripped through Venice, in today's Italy, killing over 50,000 people or one-third of the population. In fear and panic, the Venetians prayed and vowed to build a new church for the Redeemer once the plague passed. On July 20, 1577, they laid the foundation for the city's Church of the Redeemer. Today, Venice celebrates the end of this plague with the Redeemer Festival each year, including a colorful parade of gondolas through the canals of Venice.

Fibroid Awareness Month: July

Commencing in 2016, July is Fibroid Awareness Month. Currently, several states and the District of Columbia recognize the month, with a grassroots push to make it a national month in the works. Estimates say that over 200,000 women are affected in the United States only, and this event is to spread awareness about the disease, what symptoms women should be wary of, and how or where to seek help. Fibroids (uterina myoma) are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years. The cause of fibroids isn't well understood. Risk factors include a family history of fibroids, obesity, or early onset of puberty. Symptoms may include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and pelvic pain. Treatments include medications and removal of the fibroid. Fibroids are chronic, meaning they can last for years or even lifelong. Supporters of the campaign are encouraged to wear white throughout July.

Introduced as French Fried Potatoes in 1856 in the E. Warren book "Cookery for Maids of All Work," French fries originated in Belgian. Fried Clam Day, Ntl. (1916): July 3

National Fried Clam Day marks the anniversary of this bar appetizer arriving on the world culinary stage in 1916 via Lawrence Henry and Bessey Woodman's small store, Woodman's in Essex, Massachusetts. Like many familiar foods, fried clams were somewhat of an accident. Chatting with friends, Henry and Bessey Woodman were trying to figure out how to get more business into their store. A friend suggested they fry the clams they had yet to shuck. At first, it seemed silly. Clams have shells. But, once the shells were removed and the meat dipped in batter and fried, a new East Coast favorite was born. They tested out their fried clams the next day at a 4th of July celebration; the rest is history. Today, over 100 years later, you can still get the original fried clams at Woodman's. This event first appeared in 2015.

Friendship, Intl. Day of: July 30

International Day of Friendship promotes cultural peace and seeks to build connections between different communities and countries. Paraguay was the first country to observe World Friendship Day on July 30, 1958, as proposed by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho. It is said to have originated in the US in 1919. However, Joyce Hall, the Hallmark cards founder, actively promoted this event in 1930. In 1998, Winnie-the-Pooh was designated as the Ambassador of Friendship by Nane Annan, the wife of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in an event co-sponsored by the UN Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises and hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford. By July 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30 as the International Day of Friendship. India and the United States observe this day on the first Sunday in August and refer to it as World Friendship Day. The rest of the world celebrates it on July 30 as International Friendship Day, and the United Nations created both events. Dates of observance can vary by nation.

Fry an Egg on the Sidewalk Day is a bit of a joke, preying on an old wives tale. July is one of the hottest months in the United States. Some regions of the US have Fry an Egg on the Sidewalk events where lots of people participate. If you live in Alaska, chances are slim you can do this, but if you're sweating for most of the day and want to try something different, consider giving this holiday a chance! Before you try this and get disappointed, please know you are about to fail in your attempt. Eggs need a temperature of 158°F (70°C) to become solid. If you are a human, you cannot survive that heat, and although your little experiment is bound to fail, who said it wouldn't be fun to try it out anyway?
