During Hot Dog Month, more hot dogs are consumed in July than any other month due to the nationwide prevalence of hot dog contests. Hosted by the National Hot Dog Council, an estimated 7 billion hot dogs are eaten between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the 4th of July celebration, more than 150 million are enjoyed. Comfort food to many Americans, hot dogs got their name when Tad Dorgan (1877-1929), an American cartoonist, had difficulty spelling "dachshund sausage," the original moniker. As a fix, he penned this sausage as "hot dog" in one of his sketches.

Human Trafficking, World Day Against: July 30

In 2013 the United Nations designated July 30 as World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, or World Day Against Human Trafficking, to raise awareness of the situation and highlight the stories of victims. The research organization Polaris has compiled heat maps and statistics and current statistics on human trafficking in the United States here: https://polarisproject.org/human-trafficking/facts. As reported by the International Labour Organization and other global authorities: The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. 81% are trapped in forced labor. 25% are children. 75% are women and girls. The International Labor Organization estimates that forced labor and human trafficking is a $150 billion industry worldwide. The U.S. Department of Labor has identified 139 goods from 75 countries made by forced and child labor. In 2016, an estimated 1 out of 6 endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were likely child sex trafficking victims. Of those, 86% were in the care of social services or foster care when they ran. There is no official estimate of the total number of human trafficking victims in the U.S. Polaris estimates that the total number of victims nationally reaches into the hundreds of thousands when estimates of both adults and minors and sex trafficking and labor trafficking are aggregated.

Hurricane Supplication Day (VI/VG): July 24

Hurricanes devastate the Caribbean, and no island or shoreline is safe. Due to global warming, storms continue to grow in strength, frequency, and size. Since the 16th century, the fourth Monday of July has been a legal holiday for supplication or prayer. Residents attend their churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples to pray for protection from hurricanes in the upcoming four months.

"I Forgot Day" focuses on occasions people have forgotten and reminds people of future appointments. It is a catch-up day. If you forgot a birthday, this is the do-over day. If you missed an appointment, now you have an excuse. To celebrate, send a mia culpa card or email message and apologize for the missive. This event was created by Gave Anderson, a Davenport University student advisor from Granger, Indiana; National I Forgot Day was conceptualized during the period when she used to forget a lot of appointments. Instead of getting flustered about the missed dates, she created this unofficial day as a way to make amends.

National Ice Cream Month was signed into law on July 9, 1984, by President Ronald Reagan through Presidential Proclamation 5219, after Senator Walter Dee Huddleston sponsored the Joint Resolution 298 on May 17 of the same year. National Ice Cream Month is sponsored by the International Dairy Foods Association in acknowledgment of the importance of dairy farmers and the products they produce.

The Fourth of July marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by the colonies of America from England. The American Revolution, fought by 13 colonies against Great Britain, followed the declaration. The war occured between 1776 to 1783, though skirmishes began as early as 1773. At the time, Great Britain was the world's super power, and the United States was a belligerent colony. The war began July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted for independence. The declaration occurred two days later, on July 4, 1776. Most people do not realize that the Revolutionary War only involved 15% of American citizens on both sides. It does not take a lot of people to change history. It just takes a revolutionary idea and enough people to make it happen. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. The Fourth of July became an official federal holiday in 1941. Still, it was celebrated long before that, beginning in the 18th century. The Fourth of July is one of seven national holidays in the United States that most people have off. The others are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
