Hijri (emigration), or Islamic New Year, is observed on the first day of Muharram, which is the first month in the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar begins in 622 AD, and it marks when Mohammed, the prophet of the faith, emigrated from the city of Mecca to Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia. The Islamic calendar is shorter than the Gregorian calendar by 11 days yearly and follows the moon, totaling 354.4 days in length. The calendar begins at sundown, which is why you’ll sometimes see different dates for the event. Some calendars list the first full day, and some list the day it begins after sundown.

The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims to determine the dates of religious events and observances, including Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Hajj.

The calendar consists of 12 months, each 29 or 30 days long, and numbers 354 or 355 days a year. Unlike the solar-based Gregorian calendar, the Islamic calendar is lunar-based, with each month beginning with the sighting of the crescent moon. The Prophet Muhammad introduced the Islamic calendar in the seventh century, and it is the official calendar in many Muslim-majority countries. Saudi Arabia uses it for civil and financial purposes but uses the Gregorian for international business, and most Muslim-majority countries use both.

Jabotinsky Day is a holiday in Israel that honors the life and legacy of Vladimir Jabotinsky, a prominent Zionist leader, author, and military strategist. The holiday is observed annually on the Hebrew date of 29th Tammuz, which usually falls in July. Jabotinsky was a central figure in the Zionist movement and one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the early 20th century. He was a strong advocate for Jewish self-defense, including pre-emptive defense, and a proponent of a Jewish state in Palestine. Jabotinsky founded several Zionist organizations, including the Revisionist Zionists and the Betar youth movement. Jabotinsky Day became a national holiday in Israel in 2005. On this day, various events and activities are held throughout Israel to commemorate Jabotinsky's life and work and to promote the dogma of Zionism. Created in 2006, the Black Sea Jazz Festival continues to grow yearly in eclectic Batumi, Georgia. Batumi is known for several things: its wine, its varied architecture, its beaches, and its Jazz Festival. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month (US): July

The Arthritis Foundation sponsors National Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month in the United States in July, and Canada observes it in March. Though most people associate arthritis with aging, it affects all ages, and two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65. Several severe forms of arthritis occur in teenagers and people in their 20s and 30s. Arthritis Awareness Month is a multi-year campaign geared at debunking the myths of arthritis. Campaigns include The Faces of Arthritis featuring public service ads focusing on the harsh realities of arthritis and dispelling the common stereotypes often associated with the disease. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects 50 million people, 20% of the population or one in five adults. The United Kingdom has an arthritis care awareness week in mid-May, and Canada has set aside September as its arthritis awareness month. The Arthritis Foundation also sponsors Arthritis Awareness Month in May.

In the Hindu religion, Ekadashi is a holy day, with two each month. Kamika Ekadashi is associated with Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Kiswahili Language Day, World: July 7

In the 1950s, the United Nations established the Kiswahili language unit of United Nations Radio. Today, Kiswahili is the only African language within the Directorate of Global Communications at the United Nations. The UN General Assembly, through its resolution 71/328 of 11 September 2017, advocated for a day dedicated to each of its official languages to promote awareness of their history, culture, and use. The resolution also encouraged the expansion of this initiative to other non-official languages spoken globally. In response, the 41st session of the General Conference of UNESCO adopted resolution 41 C/61, which recognized the role of the Kiswahili language in promoting cultural diversity, fostering dialogue among civilizations, and advancing multilingualism as a core value of the UN. As such, UNESCO proclaimed 7 July each year as World Kiswahili Language Day, making Kiswahili the first African language to be recognized in such a manner by the UN. Kiswahili, a Bantu language, is one of the most widely spoken African languages, with over 200 million speakers and more than a dozen main dialects. It is a common form of communication in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, bridging both past and present.
