Seabird Day, World (1844): July 3

First held in 2017, World Seabird Day seeks to raise awareness about the ocean’s ‘canaries in the coal mine,’ seabirds. The day was prompted by the extinction of the Great Auk, with its last recorded sighting on July 3, 1844. Each year, scientists and animal enthusiasts subsequently mark this day of remembrance and seek to take actions that ensure no other species suffers the same fate. Shabbat Chazon (J): July 21/22

Shabbat Chazon, or the Shabbat of Vision, is the Haftarah (Tanakh sections) read on the Saturday before the fast of Tisha B'Av, which mourns the destruction of the two temples of the Hebrew faith. Shabbat is Sabbath or Saturday in Hebrew. Shabbat Chazon is sometimes called the "Black Shabbat" as it is the saddest of the year. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday.

Shabbat Nachamu (J): July 28/29

Shabbat Nachamu commemorates the comfort experienced during the suffering of the Jewish people in the time of Isaiah. Shabbat is "Sabbath" or Saturday in Hebrew, and it is the first of the seven Sabbaths in which haftarot (readings from the Book of Prophets) are performed leading up to the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. PLEASE NOTE: All Hebrew calendar months begin and end at sundown. LEEP Calendar marks Jewish months starting on their first full day. Observant people of the faith will observe the beginning of the month at sunset the day prior.

Shark Awareness Day: July 14

Shark Awareness Day raises awareness of the ocean-dwelling predator and changes the perception of sharks in a more positive light. Threatened by pollution, overfishing, and incidental killings, shark populations are rapidly dwindling worldwide. Nearly 100 million sharks are killed annually, an average of 11,000 per hour. Raising awareness on this issue will improve their existing ecosystem and remove much of the stigma these majestic creatures do not deserve.

Shark Week: August July 11-18

Shark Week is television's longest-running must-see summer TV event on Discovery Channel. Shark Week includes live talk shows, documentaries, and all things sharks. Aquariums and other forms of amusement tied to oceans and the sea often have specials throughout Shark Week. Shark Week is the programming week that put Discovery Channel initiated in 1986. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. Shravana Amavasya (H): July 17

In the Hindu religion Somvati Amavas, or Amavasya, means 'dark moon' and refers to the new moon phase in Sanskrit. Somvaty Amavasya falls on a Monday. The faithful believe fasting on this Amavasya wards off widowhood in women and ensures children in marriage. Washing in a holy river protects from illness, and daily activities are conducted in silence. Donations given to poor children are believed to be highly effective on Somvaty Amavasya. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Single Working Women's Week: July 31 - August 6

Single Working Women's Day and Single Working Women's Week honor women who work, bringing home their bacon without support. Often single women face casual discrimination such as being judged on their looks, their age, and statements like: "She doesn't have a family to support; therefore, she doesn't need __________ like so and so." "She will get married, so there is no need to promote her." "She's in one of her moods today. Probably that time of the month." Discrimination includes actions like the sales team going to a strip club, playing golf when she doesn't, or using references to sports or sex that exclude or shame her in team building. Barbara Payne realized that there is no celebration to commemorate working single women. She created this day to provide support, advice, and encouragement for single women in the workplace. Fifty-one percent of women in the United States are single. Working is a challenge for anyone; however, women who work and are part of a recognized couple tend to benefit more than their single counterparts in many ways. These include lower taxes, taking advantage of bulk pricing, better restaurant seating, support after a rough day, and someone to share child-rearing. Then there are the everyday tasks like running to the dry cleaner and picking up milk after work. When you're single, you do it all. And if you lose your job, no one can help with the expenses until you get a new one. Of course, being a single working woman also has advantages (if you don't have children). You keep your paycheck. Networking is much easier if you don't have to be home after work and your time is your own. You do what you want. Everything has its perks. Still, anyone who has been a single working woman will tell you that it's demanding but rewarding. This week is a time to applaud your single female friends born without trust funds and show how much you appreciate them. Send a card, give a gift, buy a drink, or write a blog post. Mani/Pedi, anyone? Just don't forget to include yourself.

Sleepyhead Day (FI): July 27

Sleepyhead Day might be called the revenge of the early risers, especially if you are not a morning person. It is celebrated in Finland yearly and pranks the family snoozer, the last person to get up. This person is doused with water or thrown into a lake or sea. Another Finnish strategy is to shave the left side of the sleepyhead's chest, but only if the family snoozer is a man. In the towns of Naantali and Hanko, it's a public event. A prominent member of each is thrown into the sea at precisely 7 A.M. The person's name is kept secret until the last minute. Approaching dunking hour, selected townspeople whisk him or her out of bed and into the drink. Splash! Good morning! The Sleepyhead Day tradition is rooted in the story of the Saints of Ephesus (the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus). Custom says that around 250 AD, the seven men fled to a cave fearing persecution of their Christian beliefs. Fervently praying for God's help, they fell asleep and woke up two centuries later.

July 11 (7/11) was the designated day when customers can enjoy lots of freebies, including its popular Slurpee. Snake Day, World: July 16

World Snake Day aims to change perceptions of snakes. Sponsored by Advocate for Snake Preservation (ASP), its mission focuses on science, education, and advocacy to promote compassionate conservation and coexistence with snakes. From the promoters: "Each year, tens of thousands of rattlesnakes are taken from the wild to be displayed and slaughtered for entertainment and profit at rattlesnake roundups, which occur throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama. Promoted as folksy, family-friendly fun, these events foster disrespect for native wildlife and the natural world. They are a gross example of wildlife management based on fear rather than science. Professional hunters, not bound by 'bag' or 'take' limits, remove snakes from their native habitats and are awarded cash prizes for bringing in the most and biggest snakes. Most snakes are caught by pouring gasoline into their winter dens, polluting surrounding land and water, and may impact up to 350 other wildlife species. Rattlesnake roundups depend on the public's misconception of snakes as dangerous pests that we cannot safely tolerate near our homes. No aspect of these events is sustainable, educational, or necessary." World Snake Day is one of two days highlighting snakes, and the other is Serpents Day.
