Tish'a B'Av (J): July 26/27

Tish'a B'Av is a fast observed annually by the Jewish faith to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem's first and second Hebrew temples. The temple was the center of the Hebrew faith, with the Holy of Holies, the room in which God lived at its center. Its destruction in 70 AD nearly destroyed the religion and forced the Sanhedrin and other religious leaders into hiding. Over the next 125 - 250 years, the priests wrote down the oral traditions of the faith and created the Talmud. The Talmud began in two versions, Jerusalem and the Babylonian. Encyclopedic in a multi-volume collection, the Talmud records the laws and traditions in two parts, the Mishnah and Gemara, and is central to the modern faith. The Talmud's creation formed the third iteration of the religion, based upon rabbinic leadership and philosophy. It is this version we call Judaism today. Tish'a B'Av is considered the saddest day in the Jewish calendar; people fast for 25 hours and read from The Book of Lamentations, which depicts how Jerusalem was destroyed. Four other prohibitions observed during the fasting: No bathing or washing No applying of cream or oils No wearing of shoes No marital relations Tisha'a B'Av is rooted in the story of the Sin of the Spies (Numbers 13:1-15:41). The destruction of the first and second temples occurred on the Av 9 of the Hebrew calendar in the Gregorian years of 586 BC and 70 AD. Observant people of the faith will observe the beginning of the month at sunset the day prior.

Tour de France (FR): July 1-23

The Tour de France is an annual cycling event done in stages held in France. Tour de France is the oldest of the three most prestigious global cycling events. Although the routes may vary, the format remains the same. Cyclists pass through the Pyrenees and the Alps, finishing on the Champs-Elysees. The race lasts for 21 days and covers 3,500 kilometers. Organized in 1903 as a promotion for L'Auto, a magazine, the Amaury Sport Organization currently champions the event. There are only two times when the race was not held, during the two World Wars. Winners are determined through the compounded times of their teams (nine riders). The winner is the person with the lowest aggregate time, and that rider gets to wear the yellow jersey. Considered a UCI (Union Cycliste International) World Tour event, participants are members of the UCI World Teams unless invited by a sponsor.

Town Criers Day, Intl.: July 10

Town criers were the source of the latest news and events for much of modern history. Originating in England, town criers were primarily employed to disseminate information about the royal family and aristocracy. This event was created in 1996 by the Waterloo Town Crier Scott Fraser.

Ugly Truck Day, Ntl.: July 20

Even superstition occasionally enters the LEEP Calendar, and Unlucky Wedding Month is one example. Old wives' tales, rhymes, and poems are the reason for calling the month unlucky, and this writer disagrees. My parents were married in July 1965 and stayed together for 56 years until my father passed away in March 2022. Here are some examples of prose warning brides away from July: "Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bread." "Married in July with flowers ablaze, bitter-sweet memories in after days."

Utoeya (NO) Massacre (2011): July 22

On July 22, 2011, Utoeya Massacre occurred. Carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, the sequential attacks targeted the children of the government and business elites, ultimately claiming 77 lives. There were two attacks. The first exploded in the governmental office area in Oslo, killing eight and injuring hundreds. The homemade bomb made of fertilizer and fuel oil was parked near the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. It was a diversion to corral first responders away from his prime target, the children. The second attack occurred two hours later at a summer camp on the island of Utoeya. Breivik, wearing a police uniform and showing falsified identification, opened fire, killing 68 children and staff and injuring 110 people. The 69th victim died in a hospital of injuries. On August 24, 2012, Breivik was sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention.
