Yellow Pigs Day: July 17

Rest easy. This event has nothing to do with food and is kosher, halal, vegetarian, and vegan friendly. This little piggy does mathematics. Yellow Pigs Day is an annual celebration associated primarily with the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. The program is a summer math camp for high school students from all over the world who love math and want to learn more in a less austere and calculated manner. Their "secret symbol" the yellow pig with the number 17 printed on it, goes back to the 1970s. Not only is Yellow Pigs Day an excuse to bring together alumni, but it is also a celebration of the number 17. Why yellow pigs? That isn't explained. However, everything on campus and in the classroom has to do with the prime number 17, and yellow pigs are everywhere. Yellow Pigs Day is celebrated worldwide and now includes its own songs, traditions and general clowning around that has been adopted by programs including Mathcamp, PROMYS, MIT, the University of Chicago, and even Stanford. Youth Skills Day, World: July 15

From the United Nations: "Why is World Youth Skills Day important? Rising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in today's world for developed and developing countries alike. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020: Technology and the future of jobs shows that since 2017, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET). In 2016 there were 259 million young people classified as NEET – a number that rose to an estimated 267 million in 2019, and is projected to continue climbing to around 273 million in 2021. In terms of percentage, the trend was also slightly up from 21.7% in 2015 to 22.4% in 2020 – implying that the international target to reduce the NEET rate by 2020 will be missed. Designated by the General assembly in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship."

Zip Code Day (1963): July 1

ZIP Code Day marks the 1963 anniversary of adopting the zip code system in the United States. This simple addition to addresses has tremendous economic importance and is essential in allowing packages and letters to find their ultimate destination quickly. ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. The ZIP Code began as postal district numbers in London and Liverpool, England, and the system eventually spread throughout the world by the end of World War II.

World Zoonosis Day seeks to increase awareness of how these diseases develop and transfer and what is required to treat and survive them. Annually 1/3 of the global population falls ill to zoonotic diseases; of these, an average of 2.5 million die.

Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness (PTSD) Day, Ntl.: June 27

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Awareness Day began in 2010. In 2014 the US Congress made this a month-long event, with an awareness day on June 27. It has since gone worldwide. National Center for PTSD (NCPTSD) supports PTSD Month and encourages people to become aware of the signs of PTSD and provide effective treatments for the disease. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that manifests after exposure to a traumatic event, including rape, being forcibly separated from one's parents, war, crime victim, bullying, or domestic violence.

Sunglasses Day, Ntl.: June 27

The Vision Council sponsors National Sunglasses Day. It seeks to educate people about the importance of wearing shades to protect the eyes from the sun’s harsh ultraviolet(UV) rays. Sunglasses originated in China during the 1100s and in Rome around the second century AD. During the 19th century, syphilis sufferers often wore them due to light sensitivity, but sunglasses didn’t catch on until Hollywood stars began wearing them in the 1920s. Sam Foster was the first to mass produce and sell affordable sunglass in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1929.

INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY (take two) is a celebration to commemorate Billy Mays, the Infomercial King, who died June 28, 2009. Mays was an American icon known for his enthusiastic, yelling pitch style, hawking "As Seen on TV" products, and creating fortunes for many inventors. Arnold added this second event in 2009, and the internet community continues to honor him each year with texts, tweets, and emails in all caps. There are two CAPS LOCK DAYS each year: June 28 and October 22.

Eid al-Adha (M): June 28/29

Eid al-Adha is one of the two religious holidays observed by Muslims worldwide. It commemorates the obedience of Abraham to God when He commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Mount Moriah. But, the angel Jibra’il (Gabrial) stopped him at the last minute. Eid al-Adha is a significant holiday in Islamic majority nations and often lasts five days. The celebration begins with a prayer and then with a sermon. Eid al-Adha is part of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Also called the Feast of Sacrifice, it is on this day that Muslims buy udhiya or asqurbani, usually a goat or a sheep, for the sacrifice. The animal is killed, and the meat is divided into three parts. One part is given to relatives, the second to neighbors, and the family keeps the third. If you are Christian or Jewish, you’re probably doing a double-take at those mentioned above. Rest assured, the above is not a typo. In Islam, it is Ishmael portrayed in the story. In Christianity and Judaism, it is Isaac. The importance of this goes to lineage and the prophet Mohammed. Jesus is descended from Abraham through Isaac. Mohammed from Abraham through Ishmael. Isaac and Ishmael have the same father but different mothers. The story of the sacrifice, which Eid al-Adha celebrates, is one of the key departure points of the three faiths of the Book. How Jesus Christ is defined, and the resurrection is another. The Jewish faith believes Jesus was simply a rabbi (teacher), nothing more. The Muslims believe He was a prophet but was not killed on the cross; instead, God replaced Him with another man before He died, which means He was not resurrected. Christians believe Jesus is the Messiah promised to Abraham and the Israelites and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. He was sacrificed on the cross and resurrected three days later. All three faiths follow the first five books of the Old Testament. Each, however, has its different interpretations of it. Eid al-Adha is an example of an event interpreted differently by the three faiths, and it is celebrated in Islam, but not Christianity or Judaism.

Ommegang Pageant (BE): June 28-30

The Ommegang Pageant in Brussels, Belgium, includes a historical reenactment of the feast given June 2, 1549, by the Magistrate of Brussels in honor of Emperor Charles V, his son Philipe, Duke of Brabant and his sisters, Mary, Queen of Hungary and Eleanor, Queen of France, widow of François I, on the Grand Place of Brussels. It is an opportunity for people to experience medieval life as it once was throughout the festivities. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Paul Bunyan Legend Day: June 28*

National Paul Bunyan Day celebrates Paul Bunyan, one of the folk heroes of North America, specifically Canada, and appears to have originated in lore around 1837. Accompanied by his bull, Babe the Blue Ox, the legend says that the Great Lakes came into being because Babe needed a watering hole, and the Grand Canyon emerged because Paul Bunyan and Babe walked through the mountains dragging his axe. Paul Bunyan originated as a North American oral tradition common among loggers, but William B. Laughead popularized the stories about this character as publicity for the Red River Lumber Company. The first known printed story about Bunyan, "Caught on the Run," ran in the Duluth News Tribune on August 4, 1904. Its author is unknown. One of the more notable authors is James MacGillivray, who wrote about Paul Bunyan in "Round River" in the July 24, 1910 edition of the Detroit News. Today is one of two Paul Bunyan Days.
