Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder. Children born with it cannot process the amino acid phenylalanine. This results in mental disabilities and neurological issues including memory loss and mood disorders, if left untreated after birth. Special medical foods are required by children and adults living with PKU. There is no cure for PKU. In order to avoid irreversible brain damage, patients eat special diets, take medication and restrict the amount of phenylalanine in their diet. International Phenylketonuria Awareness Day was first held in 2013, and seeks to raise awareness about this disease and raise funds for treatment and a possible cure.

Tapioca Day, Ntl.: June 28

Tapioca Day celebrates the starch extracted from Manioc, otherwise known as cassava. It honors the culinary value and versatility of the tapioca plant, which goes by the scientific name of Manihot esculenta. The tapioca plant is native to South America. Tapioca contains the toxin cyanide but handled correctly, the poison is eliminated from the plant, making it safe to eat. The use of tapioca in cooking first appears in 1875 Cassell's "Dictionary of Cooking." There are many uses of tapioca, including as a thickening agent, flour, potato alternatives, and pearls used in pudding or bubble teas.

Treaty of Versailles (1919): June 28

Today is the anniversary of signing the Treaty of Versailles, June 28, 1919. The document officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers five years after the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Some of the treaty provisions included taking responsibility for the damage caused during the war by Germany and its allies, disarmament of Germany, and reparation payment to countries that had formed the Entente powers. The Treaty of Versailles was harsh and merciless to the losing side and is often cited as a critical reason for the growing discontent and race tensions that arose during the 1920s, which led to the rise of fascism in Europe and, ultimately, WWII.

Almond Buttercrunch Day: June 29

National Almond Buttercrunch Day commemorates almond buttercrunch, created in 1923. This candy was made popular during World War II when it was shipped to soldiers overseas. Brown & Haley, a candy company, developed the recipe and packaging. Known as Almond Roca because of its almonds and the fact that it looked like rocks, almond buttercrunch is made with butter, sugar, salt, and almonds mixed and melted to form the “rocks” and stored in tin cans.

Camera Day, World (1888): June 29

Photography enthusiasts have a lot to celebrate on National Camera Day. Today is the anniversary of the first Kodak camera sold on June 29, 1888. The camera documents whatever is happening in the world. Before its invention, people relied on paintings, which were very expensive and viewable by a select group of people. Photography changed that. It documents day-to-day living quickly and reproduces readily. The camera is not a recent invention. Several cultures claim the invention of the camera. Ibn Yunus of Egypt is often cited in Western cultures as the inventor, sometime near 1000 AD. However, written documentation of pinhole style, or camera obscura, existed nearly 1400 years earlier, in 391 BC, according to Chinese records. Therein, Mozi writes of the process used in pinhole cameras to project an image. These early cameras, however, did not allow for the collection of an image, only its projection. That changed early in the nineteenth century. The first photograph was taken by Nicephore Niepce in 1814, and he recorded the image on silver chloride-coated paper. This prototype, however, was temporary. In 1827, he produced a more permanent photograph using a wooden camera developed by Charles and Vincent Chevalier. The first modern photograph was developed in 1836 by Louis Daguerre using a copper and silver mix plate coated with iodine vapor. George Eastman of the Kodak Company produced the first film camera. By the early 2000s, cameras became digitized, resulting in higher resolutions and more detailed photographs that are much more easily reproduced and shared. The addition of cameras to cellular phones has democratized photography for the world.

Devshayani Ekadashi (H): June 29

In Hinduism, Ekadashi is an important observance, with two occurring annually. The focus is the worship of Lord Vishnu. Devotees show reverence by partial fasting. They abstain from grains, beans, cereals, certain vegetables like onions, and specific spices. Devshayani Ekadeshi (Shayani Ekadashi / Maha-ekadashi / Prathama-ekadashi / Padma Ekadashi) is the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha within the Hindu month of Ashadha. Ashadha corresponds to June – July of the Gregorian calendar. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Federal-Aid Interstate Highway Act (1956): June 29

Today is the anniversary of the passage of the Federal-Aid Interstate Highway Act in 1956. The story of how the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 (also known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act) came about is interesting. In 1919, 28-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower participated in the popular convoy across the Lincoln Highway, the longest road in the country then. The trip was exhausting and took too long for Eisenhower's liking. During World War II, Eisenhower observed the popular German autobahn network and was very impressed by it. These two events spurred him to announce his "Grand Plan" for highways in 1954 once President of the United States, and it became law two years later on June 29, 1956.

Folklife Festival, Smithsonian (US-DC): June 29-July 9

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living and cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Our free Festival takes place used to occur for two weeks every summer on the National Mall, overlapping the Fourth of July holiday. In 2019 it moved to the last weekend of June. It is an educational, research-based presentation that features master artisans and other tradition bearers. We invite visitors to sing and dance along, try craft and game workshops, learn traditional recipes, ask questions, and participate in this unique cultural exchange. Lollapalooza Stockholm launched in 2019, featuring three days of music. Created in 1991 in Chicago, Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that features an eclectic collection of popular music genres, including alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The festival was created by Perry Farrell, the lead singer of the alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band and has since evolved into a significant event, attracting thousands of music fans worldwide. Lollapalooza began as a touring festival, visiting multiple cities across the United States. However, it faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading to its cancellation in 2004. The festival returned in 2005 as a weekend-long event in Grant Park, Chicago. Over the years, many notable acts have performed at Lollapalooza, such as Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and countless others. The festival continues to be a significant event in live music and remains an essential destination for music fans. Typically, the festival includes eight stages, 170+ bands, an art market, shopping, a children's mini-fest, and Chow Town, with food from local restaurants showcasing the variety and quality of their menu selections. Scleroderma Awareness Day, World (1940): June 29

World Scleroderma Awareness Day is set aside during World Scleroderma Awareness Month to bring awareness to this autoimmune condition through fundraising events and public outreach. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that causes the skin and internal organs to thicken and tighten, leading to organ failure and death. This medical condition has no cure. The date marks the anniversary of the death of Swiss painter Paul Klee on June 29, 1940. He died from the disease.

Waffle Iron Day, Electric: June 29

National Waffle Iron Day honors the electric waffle iron. Waffles have been around since the Middle Ages. Originally intended to be used in an open flame, the original design used two metal pans attached to a long pole, and the cake was cooked in between these pans in an open flame. Cornelius Swartwout patented the first stove-top waffle iron on August 24, 1869. There is no specific patent or product launch attached to this day. However, General Electric created the first electric waffle iron prototype in 1911, which went on sale in 1918.
