Gay & Lesbian (LGBTQ+) Pride Month (1969): June

LGBTQ+ Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, New York. This month, throughout the United States, pride parades, workshops, symposiums, and concerts focus on the LGBT experience. Memorials occur for those who lost the battle against HIV. The Stonewall Riot occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in Greenwich, New York, in June 1969. Before the Stonewall Riot, authorities raided gay and lesbian bars across the country under the impression that the said bars were violating the local liquor ban. Arrested and named in the dailies, many patrons experienced dire consequences. However, in June 1969, patrons of Stonewall Inn resisted police harassment, which led to a movement that encouraged outlawing practices against the LGBT community. In 1998, President Clinton signed Executive Order 13087 promoting equal opportunity for gays and lesbians via Federal government organizations. Proclamation 7316 was declared in June 2000, making Gay and Lesbian Pride Month officially recognized by the US government. On June 1, 2009, President Obama issued Proclamation No 8387, changing the name to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. The President noted the contributions of the LGBT community to the progress of anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation and the initiatives they promoted that curtailed the HIV pandemic.

Heimlich Maneuver Day, Intl.(1974): June 1

The Heimlich Maneuver was introduced via the Emergency Medicine Journal on June 1, 1974, by a thoracic surgeon and medical innovator, Dr. Henry Heimlich. Though Dr. Heimlich passed away in 2016, Heimlich Heroes continues sharing the importance of his life-saving technique. The Heimlich Maneuver involves using abdominal thrusts to force air from the lungs to expel an object on which someone is choking. Since Dr. Heimlich developed the maneuver, it has saved an estimated 100,000 lives worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, choking is the fifth leading cause of unintentional death in the United States. Heimlich Heroes’ mission is to end these preventable choking deaths.

Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month: June

Eight infants a day are diagnosed with hip dysplasia in Australia. Despite this, the likelihood of a parent being aware of the condition is only 57 percent. This limited awareness contributes to the rising number of those diagnosed late with this potentially life-changing condition. Hip dysplasia, or developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), occurs when the ball and socket do not fit together in their 'normal' position. Sometimes this is due to abnormal development and lack of hip joint growth. It can result in months — and sometimes years — of medical treatment. Left undiagnosed, it's one of the leading causes of early-onset arthritis of the hip and, possibly, the need for a hip replacement; it is a significant public health issue. Treatment is optimized when diagnosis occurs within the first three months of life. During International Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month, parents and parents-to-be are urged to educate themselves about the risk factors for and potential signs of hip dysplasia, and to ensure their children's hips are checked not only at birth but at 1-4 weeks, 6-8 weeks, 6-9 months, 12-months, and then at regular health reviews until 3.5 years of age.

President Bill Clinton proclaimed a week in June 1995. In 2002, President George W. Bush expanded the observance to encompass the entire month of June. During National Homeownership Month, various government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private sector entities work together to raise awareness about the advantages of owning a home and the resources and programs available to help people achieve homeownership. Activities and events typically include educational workshops, seminars, and counseling services to provide prospective homebuyers with the information and tools they need to make informed decisions. Some of the key objectives of National Homeownership Month include the following: Educating the public about the benefits of homeownership, such as building equity, creating stability, and fostering a sense of community. Highlighting available resources, such as financial assistance programs, mortgage options, and homebuyer education courses, that can help make homeownership more attainable. Encouraging responsible homeownership by promoting sound financial management, sustainable housing, and informed decision-making.
