National Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Month is an initiative of ECPAT-USA, an association of travel and entertainment companies that seeks to protect every child’s fundamental human right to grow up free from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The primary objectives of this organization and the month are to: 1) Advocate for federal and state legislation that prevents exploitation, protects children and guarantees that children subjected to sexual slavery or sex trafficking will not face prosecution in court for prostitution. 2) Promote corporate responsibility among private companies with a strong focus on tourism. 3) Educate first responders and ordinary citizens about this issue so that they can identify victims and join us in the fight to protect children better. 4) Empower youth to take the lead against human trafficking by equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to help them become activists against this terrible trade.

Human Trafficking, Wear Blue Day: January 11

The Blue Campaign is the unified voice for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) efforts to combat human trafficking. Working in collaboration with law enforcement, government, non-governmental and private organizations, the Blue Campaign strives to protect the fundamental right of freedom and to bring those who exploit human lives to justice. Through the Blue Campaign, DHS raises public awareness about human trafficking, leveraging partnerships to educate the public to recognize human trafficking and report suspected instances. The Blue Campaign also offers training to law enforcement and others to increase the detection and investigation of human trafficking, protect victims, and bring suspected traffickers to justice. DHS also provides immigration relief to non-U.S. citizen victims of human trafficking. DHS utilizes a victim-centered approach to combat human trafficking, placing equal value on identifying and stabilizing victims and investigating and prosecuting traffickers. Victims are crucial to investigations and prosecutions; each case and every conviction changes lives. DHS understands how difficult it can be for victims to come forward and work with law enforcement due to their trauma. DHS is committed to helping victims feel stable, safe, and secure.

Ice, Falling Ice Safety Day: January 12

Homeowners should knock icicles down, and pedestrians must avoid buildings with hanging icicles. A single icicle can weigh over 30-40 pounds; if it falls on your head, it can kill you. Urban Idiotarods or—Idiot-a-rod—are urban shopping cart races that receive their name from the Iditarod, the 1,000-mile dog-sledding race in Alaska. The storied Iditarod wasn't amused and sued, so it became the Idiotarodorama NYC in New York City. Idiotarods are a funny tradition in which five "idiots" are harassed to a grocery shopping cart/trolley and run through the streets of a city. Sabotage is permitted and encouraged, prompting people to trip each other, throw items and topple obstacles. The event is quite amusing. The first Idiotarod took place in San Francisco in 1994. Still, today you can take part in an Idiotarod in Ann Arbor, Asheville, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Iowa City, New York City, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, St. Louis, Toronto, Los Angeles, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Washington, D.C., with new cities added every year.
