Irish Coffee Day in January is one of two such events. The second is November 10 and marks the 1952 anniversary of Irish Coffee arriving in the United States and becoming one of the world’s most beloved cocktails. The original recipe for Irish Coffee goes like this: “Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land.” Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco was the first to serve Irish Coffee on November 10, 1952. Joe Sheridan, a bartender, is the mixologist. Stanton Delaplane is the journalist who discovered the drink in Ireland and brought the secret formula back to the US. The original Irish Coffee is believed to have been first served at the flying boat terminal in Foynes, Ireland, sometime during the winter of 1943. J.R.R. Tolkien Day (1892): January 3

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy literature. The professor's most famous works are the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, and all are still read and loved worldwide. Celebrate each January 3 at 9 pm by raising a toast for the professor.

Jackson-Lee Day (Lee-Jackson Day): January 13

General Robert E Lee and General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson were confederate officers representing the South during the American Civil War. Both are Virginia natives born on January 19th and 21st, respectively. In recent years there has been a backlash against all celebrations of the confederacy and its icons. Though once a state-observed holiday in Virginia, increasingly counties and cities are bypassing it. With African Americans, tying this event to the National Martin Luther King holiday weekend is insulting. Lee and Jackson were slave owners and fought to preserve slavery. Until 2000, the state celebrated all three men on the same day.

John Chilembwe Day (MW)(1995): January 16

John Chilembwe was a Baptist pastor who helped lead an uprising against British colonial rule in now Malawi (Nyasaland). The rebellion lasted from January 23 through the 26th, 1915. Though the revolt would fail, Chilembwe was shot by the police and died on February 3, 1915—his efforts, however, did not die. January 16 is set aside each year as a day of remembrance of him. Chilembwe is a national holiday ordained on January 16, 1995.

Kazoo Day, Ntl. (1852): January 28

National Kazoo Day celebrates an instrument created during the nineteenth century in the United States. Celebrated on January 28th (or on the fourth Thursday in January), National Kazoo Day was founded by Chaplin Willard Rahn of the Joyful Noise Kazoo Band located at the Homewood Retirement Home in Williamsport, Maryland. The campaign to make the kazoo the national musical instrument of the United States continues to this day. The kazoo is an American musical instrument first developed in the 1840s and introduced to the world in 1852 by Alabama Vest and Thaddeus Von Clegg, a German clockmaker, during the Georgia State Fair. Often referred to as the Down South Submarine, the kazoo creates music via vibrations through the instrument. Changing the humming style of the musician changes the vibration. On this day, kazoo enthusiasts would be delighted to know that kazoos go on sale. It is also when kazoo players meet up, play and share their music.

Korean American Day honors the first 102 Korean immigrants to arrive in the United States on January 13, 1903. The US congress set aside this day in 2005 with a resolution. The Korea Economic Institute of America annually sponsors a highly anticipated luncheon in Washington, DC, in honor of the anniversary. Members of the Korean-American community throughout the United States celebrate this day.

Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi (H): January 10

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers precede the breaking of the fast to Lord Ganesha. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India.
