In light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally, we need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the complex and sometimes impossible career they have chosen in public service to us all. On January 9 of each year, we will call our nation’s citizens to action in support of law enforcement. Those citizens who appreciate law enforcement and are discouraged by the negative attention are encouraged to take time on January 9 to show their support. This event first ran in 2015.

Leprosy Day, World: January 29

World Leprosy Day takes place on the last Sunday in January. The day aims to raise awareness of a disease that many people believe is extinct, when in fact, around 210,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The first documented case occurred near 600 BC. The last Sunday in January was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul Follereau in 1953 as the third Sunday from Epiphany from the Catholic calendar. The Catholic Church then reads the story of The Gospel of Luke, where Jesus meets and heals a person with leprosy.

Library Selfie Day, created in 2014, encourages people to enter their local library and take a selfie with the books and other services offered for posting on Social Media. Throughout the nation, thousands of public and private libraries hold special events on this day, including photography competitions for the best and most creative selfies. The University of Nebraska's agriculture and ranching programs focus on the needs of men and women who raise cattle and other livestock in 2023, and it has declared it the Year of the Stockman. Stockmen work with animals, caring for them, raising them, and seeing to their health and needs.
