Manuary™ (CA/US/UK): January

Established in 2010, Manuary™ raises funds to support research and improve clinical care for patients suffering from head and neck cancer. Men are four times more likely to acquire this type of cancer. In support of Manuary, men allow their beards to grow by not shaving for 31 days! The ultimate goal of Manuary is to improve cure rates and quality of life for patients suffering from this disease. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Historically linked to tobacco and alcohol use, new associations link it to the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is on the rise. Head and neck cancers and their treatment can profoundly impact patient quality of life, as facial appearance, voice, breathing, and swallowing can all be compromised. Survival with contemporary treatment consisting of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy can be successful; however, up to 50% of patients with advanced cancers die from the disease.

King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. The national holiday moves to allow for a three-day weekend in the United States. Dr. Martin Luther King was an American pastor who rose to prominence in the 1950s as a voice for social justice and equal rights. His distinctive auditory style galvanized an entire movement and played a vital role in the 1964 Civil Rights act, which discriminated against persons based on race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or sex as a crime. He is considered one of the most influential people of the 20th century. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

Today is his actual birthday, January 15, 1929, and the annual holiday in his honor is celebrated in the US on the Monday closest to this date. King’s distinctive auditory style galvanized an entire movement and played a key role in the 1964 Civil Rights act, which discriminated against persons based on race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or sex, a crime. He is considered one of the most influential people of the 20th Century. Dr. King was assassinated for his efforts on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was only 39 years old.

Measure Your Feet Day commemorates how we measure feet, though why it is not on the birthday (May 16, 1903) of the device’s inventor or the day patent US1682366 was approved (August 28, 1928) or filed (November 4, 1925), or even his death (November 22, 1992) is unknown. There seems to be nothing significant about this date, historically. The Brannock Device® was revolutionary, simple to use, and increased the wear and comfort of shoes. Charles F. Brannock invented the device to attract more customers to his store. The US Army took notice in the 1940s, and it became the standard for determining shoe size and fit. We still use his invention today. Brannock was inducted into the Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
