Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive: May 14

The Food Drive is held each year on the second Saturday in May. “With kids out of school and the departure of our winter guests, our food needs increase greatly during the summer months. Without school-supported programs, our clients’ food budgets are stretched to the breaking point.” Arizona’s Apache Junction Food Bank’s Sharon Brown When the national food drive started in 1993, food banks suggested that it be held in the spring, when the stocks of food donated during the winter holidays were starting to run low. “Without the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, it would be very difficult for the food pantry to have enough food throughout the year,” Jason Schaff of Santa Clarita, CA’s Valley Food Pantry told The Signal. The NALC was able to provide critically needed goods to local food distribution centers in every state. The tally for the 2017 drive, as of the June 2017 Postal Record’s deadline, was 71 million pounds of food collected in more than 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Midnight Sun (NO): May 14 - July 30

If you've ever wished you didn't have to go to sleep when the sun goes down, head to North Cape in Norway. Between May 14 and July 30 each year, the sun never sets below the horizon. It is truly 24-hours of sunshine.

North Cape is the northern most town in Europe and is well inside the Arctic Circle.

However, some people became impure due to contact with corpses and could not take part in the Passover. For them, God established the fourteenth of Iyar as a "Second Passover" or Pesach Sheni.

Windmill Day, Ntl. (NL): May 14

Windmills are national historic sites in the Netherlands. There are currently over 1200 in the country, of which 300 are occasionally still used. Windmills have existed over 3,500 years and were used in irrigation, industry and food production. They also propelled early organs, the musical instrument that is. The type we're today accustomed to, those afforded to the Netherlands, actually originated during the golden age of Islam in the Middle East during the 8th and 9th Centuries. Windmills have come a long way over the centuries, but their iconography continues to associated with Netherlands and other European cultures. Today is a day to celebrate their past and look forward to their future as a renewable energy source.

Chocolate Chip Day, Ntl.: May 15

National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are often added to cookies, cakes and even cocoa drinks. Chocolate chip cookies were first created by Ruth Graves Wakefield of Massachusetts during 1938. She broke a Nestle chocolate bar into pieces and added the chips to her cookies recipe. Because of the popularity of the recipe, Nestle agreed to print the recipe on the back of the chocolate bar. By 1940, Nestle began selling chocolate chip packs. This is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

Eosinophil Awareness Week, Ntl.: May 15-21

Created by the US Congress in 2007, National Eosinophil Awareness Week (NEAW) addresses eosinophil-associated diseases. Eosinophils (pronounced “ee-oh-sin-oh-fills”) are a type of white blood cell that helps our immune systems fight off infections and parasites. They also play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system, tissues, organs, and/or bloodstream, without a known cause, he or she may have an eosinophil-associated disease. These conditions are further characterized by the areas of the body in which the eosinophils have accumulated. A few examples include the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis), stomach (eosinophilic gastritis), or the bladder (eosinophilic cystitis). Symptoms of eosinophil disease may vary depending on the area of the body affected, and by age. Patients often embark on a long, frustrating journey seeing many different specialists before a diagnosis is made. Although not commonly life-threatening, these chronic diseases require lifelong treatment and can cause debilitating symptoms. Most subsets of eosinophil-associated disease do not yet have an FDA-approved pharmaceutical indicated for treatment.

May 15 was proclaimed the International Day of Families by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237. Hustle Chicago (US-IL): May 15

This annual fundraising race in Chicago for the Respiratory Health Associations features running up either 94 floors or 52 floors at 875 N. Michigan. More than 4,000 people each year compete and raise run to raise money. Proceeds go towards Respiratory Health Association’s lung disease and clean air education, research and policy change efforts.
