National Smile Month is the United Kingdom’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign. Together, with thousands of individuals and organizations, National Smile Month promotes three key messages: 1) Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste; 2) Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks; 3) Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. The aim of National Smile Month is to improve oral health in the United Kingdom. Hundreds of events and activities throughout the country educate and engage local communities on the importance of a healthy mouth. Created in 1976.

Straw Hat Day (1916): May 15

Straw Hat Day occurs on the second Saturday in May at Ivy League schools each year since 1916. This is an Ivy League tradition that began at the University of Pennsylvania. Straw Hat day is the official ushering in of the summer wardrobe and a bit of rebellion against the status quo. The traditions of Straw Hat Day are incorporated into the present day passing of the class from graduating seniors to the junior class at the University of Pennsylvania. The day continues to stand on its own whilst at Penn, “Hey Day” is often celebrated at the end of April or in the first week of May. According to the University’s site, this is what it is all about: “For many years prior to origination of Hey Day in 1916, the principal spring celebration for undergraduates was 'Straw Hat Day'. Straw Hat Day was the second Saturday of each May, the special event of the day being a baseball game with Princeton. Today it occurs annually on May 15. At the time, there was strict observance of the tradition that a higher education deserves appropriate dress. Thus, when students went to baseball games, they generally wore tailored suits, shirts with collars and neckties, garters and hats. On Straw Hat Day, the usual felt hats were laid aside and the students appeared in straw hats. Straw Hat Day was so widely accepted in Philadelphia that no one in the city dared wear a straw hat prior to this day."

Unicycle Day, Ride a: May 15

National Unicycle Week and Ride a Unicycle Day first ran in 2017 and is sponsored by the Unicycling Society of America. Its purpose is to encourage people to try unicycling, a fun challenge and great for building core strength and improving balance. National Unicycle Week begins on the third Sunday in May (which is also Ride a Unicycle Day) and goes through the following Saturday.

The transition of sun from Mesha rashi to Vrishabha rashi takes place during Vrishabha Sankranti. Giving cows as gift is considered auspicious on this day. AIDS, First Man Cured of AIDS Announced (2011): May 16

Today is the anniversary of the announcement of the first man cured of HIV. For those of us alive in the late 1970s to mid-1980s, a terrifying new disease appeared on the horizon following on the heels of the free love movement and loosened condemnation against premarital sex. The baby boomer generation, the largest yet to ever exist, was young and in its prime. They stretched the boundaries of convention, experimented with sex and drugs, put off marriage and pursued education. It was a sexually charged and exciting time for youth. The future was theirs. That free-wheeling era marked by the 1960s and 1970s came crashing to an end when AIDS appeared on the scene. Suddenly, you could die a horrible slow death by having sex with the wrong person. At first, nobody really knew how you got it. It would be the early 80s before the actual virus was identified. Then, once identified, there was no way to treat or cure it. Treatments would appear in the next decade, but no cure. That changed when 45 year old Timothy Ray Brown of Berlin, a man who tested positive for HIV in 1995, tested completely clean for HIV due to the discovery of an HIV immunity gene he received through a bone marrow stem cell transplant in 2007. Doctors announced he experienced a functional cure to the world on May 16, 2011.

Biographer's Day (1763): May 16

May 16, 1763 is the day English poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic Samuel Johnson first sat down in collaboration with James Boswell in London. Boswell would go on to write the “Life of Samuel Johnson, a biography". The book has become the standard by which the modern biography would be measured and was hailed by critic Harold Bloom “as the greatest biography written in the English language. As Johnson was both a literary scholar and critic, he would have enjoyed this designation immensely. James Boswell was a mere 22 years old when he first met with Johnson. The book would not be published until 1791 when he was 50. Boswell died four years later in 1795. Biographer’s Day marks the anniversary of this first meeting between Johnson and Boswell. It is a tribute to all biographers, living and dead.

Buddha Purnima is an important day for Buddhists and Hindus. This holiday commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha and always falls on the falls full moon night in the month of Vaisakha of the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this occurs in April or May. Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddhist religion and is said to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. The main celebrations of Buddha jayanti take place in Bodh Gaya (Bihar, India). Bodh Gaya is the most sacred place for Buddhists. Temples are decorated and prayers, sermons and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries, religious halls and homes. Foul Ball Week, Ntl.(1921): May 16-21

May 16, 1921, Reuben Berman caught a foul ball during a Reds and Giants game. At the time, you were supposed to give the ball back to the teams. Berman didn't want to, so when security came to get it, he tossed it into the crowd as they escorted him out of the ballpark. He then turned around and sued the Giants, whose stadium it was, for pain and suffering, because he couldn't keep the ball. The $100 dollars he was awarded taught the baseball community a lesson and eventually every club would allow fans to keep any balls that landed in the stands. To mark that sportsman's victory, we celebrate National Foul Ball Week. This event first ran in 2017.
