Boys & Girls Club Day (1906): May 19

Boys & Girls Club Day is an annual celebration of the over 150 year old history of Boys and Girls clubs across the country. Concerned for the welfare of boys left to roam the streets in 1860, three women from Hartford, Conn. - Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley created a program to educate and entertain the youth, and it worked! Not only did their club flourish, but other communities emulated their success. In 1906 Boys Clubs from across the country joined together and the Boys Club Federation of America was born. Today is the anniversary of the 1906 creation of the Boys Club Federation of America. In 1990 the name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Devil's Food Cake Day, Ntl.: May 19

Devil’s Food Cake Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor. Devil’s Food is the first chocolate cake ever marketed as a cake mix by the Duff Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1930s. The first recipe of the cake to be published was in 1905. Essentially, Devils Food cake is a dense dark chocolate cake, usually baked in a Bundt cake tin or as a layer cake, with a rich in flavor that is not overly sweet. It can be served with a glaze, frosting or without either. Devil’s Food cake is the grandmother of the popular red velvet cake, the original which gained its red color through a chemistry (interaction of acid (sour milk), alkali (baking soda) and non alkalized unsweetened chocolate. This combination creates a blood red color in the cake. Today, food coloring is most often used.

National Hepatitis Testing Day is an educational initiative of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Division of Viral Hepatitis and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to boost screening rates in the U.S. Throughout the nation, various health institutions offer free or low cost testing. It occurs each year in May, which has been designated National Hepatitis Awareness Month since 2009, (previously it was National Hepatitis Week). The goal is to highlight the silent epidemic of more than 5 million Americans suffering from chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections.

Mental Health Action Day: May 19

First held in 2021, Mental Health Action Day is supported by over 1,300 organizations, brands, government agencies and cultural leaders. May is also Mental Health Month inn the United States. This day is intended to drive the conversation from mental health awareness to mental health action. Mental Health Action Day comes at a critical time. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a disproportionate toll on the mental health and well-being of people of color, young people and LGBTQ+ communities. Studies have found: Four in 10 adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, compared to 1 in 10 before the pandemic. Fifty-six percent of young adults ages 18-24 reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depression during the pandemic. 48% of Black people reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic versus 42% of all Adults and 40.9% of white people. Communities of Color, who have experienced disparate impacts of COVID-19 and the ongoing trauma of systemic racism from police brutality to anti-Asian violence, are also facing greater mental health challenges than ever before, but continue to face challenges accessing mental health care. The cross-sector collaboration calling attention to the great need for support and action to address mental health in the same way in which we treat physical health needs is ground breaking. From media and tech companies to nonprofits, consumer brands, government agencies and cultural leaders, the actions today are only the beginning. Coalition partners will host a series of activations ranging from public events featuring experts and activists to employee engagement activities, all with the goal of encouraging and empowering people to take an initial action, whether for themselves or others, to support their mental health needs.

May 19, 1941, Nora Ephron was born. Nora Ephron was an American journalist, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, novelist, producer, director, and blogger, best known for her romantic comedies. She was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Writing: for Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, and Sleepless in Seattle. Nora died on June 26, 2012, but the day of her birth became known as the Romantic Comedy Day.

Sankashti Chaturthi (H): May 19

In Hindu faith, Chaturthi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (sight of the moon). The breaking of the fast is preceded by prayers to Lord Ganesha. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon and stars. Defense Transportation Day, Ntl.: May 20

National Defense Transportation Day recognizes our Nation's transportation infrastructure, as well as the men and women who build, maintain, and utilize it. In 1957. by joint resolution Congress requested the President designate the third Friday in May of each year as National Defense Transportation Day, and, by joint resolution approved May 14, 1962, as amended (36 U.S.C. 133), that the week during which that Friday falls be designated as National Transportation Week. Roads, bridges, and ports, these are the transportation networks essential securing the United States and protecting our borders. Repairing our transportation networks is about economic growth and security. Good roads ensure first responders can respond effectively during crisis. That means protecting our critical infrastructure and repairing roads and bridges that put our people at risk. Together, we can make meaningful progress toward those goals. Let us recommit this week to revitalizing transportation, pioneering new solutions to tough challenges, and making lasting investments in America's infrastructure.

Who doesn't love 'My Fair Lady', the story of street urchin Eliza Doolittle who through coaching, learns the mannerisms and speech patterns of the upper class, to ultimately fool them and get the man of her dreams? George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion forms the basis of this timeless classic, which is replicated in dozens of modern storylines.

How you speak, how well you speak, continues to designate your level of education and often status in society. Like it or not, you are judged by how well you speak, read and write. Eliza Doolittle Day reminds us of the importance of elocution, hermetics and syntax in effective communication. There will always be differences by region. National Rescue Dog Day is about finding forever homes for the more than 3.3 million dogs that end up in shelters each year. Event champion Tails That Teach, Inc. makes the following suggestions on how best to observe this day: ADOPT: If there is room in your life for a dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home. FOSTER: Many dogs abandoned to shelters benefit from socialization, or would just thrive better away from the shelter environment. Others may be in need of some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. DONATE: Shelters always need donations. In addition to financial donations, shelters have a list of much needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming, and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization. SPAY/NEUTER: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist.
