Fabry Awareness Month (AU/CA/US): April

Fabry is one of the 7,000 rare diseases most people have never heard of, which is one reason Fabry organizations in the US, Canada and Australia have chosen the month of April as Fabry Awareness Month. Caused by a defective gene, the GLA gene, Fabry disease inhibits the creation of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A, which is essential in metabolic breakdowns of fatty substances. Without the proper breakdown of nutrients, persons with Fabry are susceptible to kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes, much earlier in life than people without the condition. This month is about raising awareness of the disease and providing those suffering from it or caring for those with it with support, tools and community.

Facial Protection Month, Ntl.: April

In early spring multiple organizations observe National Facial Protection Month with the objective of teaching people how to protect their mouth, eyes and face in sports and during work activities. Athletes have a 60% greater risk of injury to any of these areas then non-athletes. Wearing safety equipment, including helmets and mouth guards, often prevent life altering injuries. This month is an opportunity to check your safety equipment and educate yourself and those you care for about the importance of proper protective gear in sports and at work.

Fair Housing Month: April

The United States has come a really long way in its fight for freedom and equality for all citizens. Fair Housing Month, a cause best articulated by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, is set aside each year to educate the public about the laws concerning real estate and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 with its 1988 amendments. The Fair Housing Act is a federal act in the United States intended to protect the buyer or renter of a dwelling from seller or landlord discrimination. It makes it unlawful to refuse to sell, rent to, or negotiate with any person because of that person's inclusion in a protected class. Protected classes are: race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap. The Fair Housing Act does not allow lessors or sellers to: Refuse to rent or sell housing; Refuse to negotiate for housing; Make housing unavailable; Deny a dwelling; Set different terms, conditions or privileges for sale or rental of a dwelling; Provide different housing services or facilities; Falsely deny that housing is available for inspection, sale, or rental; For profit, persuade owners to sell or rent (blockbusting) or; Deny anyone access to or membership in a facility or service (such as a multiple listing service) related to the sale or rental of housing on the basis of the aforementioned protected classes.

Father Damian Day (1889): April 15

Father Damien Day recognizes Father Damien, born Jozef De Veuster in Belgium on January 3, 1840, was a Roman Catholic priest who spent a significant portion of his life living and working in the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. He dedicated his days to helping those who lived with leprosy and were ostracized by the larger society. The government forced them to live in quarantine. After providing much needed spiritual, emotional and physical support for the needy and sick, Father Damien died of leprosy himself in 1889. For his lifelong dedication to humanity and all his work, the Roman Catholic Church made him a saint.

National Ferret Day seeks to educate the public to respect this lively and intelligent companion animal, the domesticated ferret. It is also a time to focus on such ferret issues as welfare, care, nutrition and responsible ownership. Many people do something special for their ferrets on this day such as preparing a special meal or taking them for a walk. This event has been slowly, but surely, gaining popularity across the country. The trend is expected to continue in the future. The United Kingdom also has a National Ferret Day each May.

Ferret, Adopt-a-Ferret Month: April

Adopt-a-Ferret Month urges people to adopt rather than shop. Ferrets are wonderful, curious animals that do well with most cats and dogs. To locate a Ferret shelter in your country or state, look here: http://ferretshelters.org From Support Our Shelters: Ferret shelters around the country are overcrowded and straining at the seams. It's bad and getting worse. The operators of ferret shelters give their time and money every day, often sacrificing their own needs to provide food, shelter, vet care and love to thousands (really...thousands) of ferrets who have been lost, abused or often simply dumped by people who can't be bothered to follow through on their commitment to their ferret. Support Our Shelter (S.O.S.) aids many needy ferret shelters each year. On this website and through the Ferret Mailing List, we distribute the FML Shelter List which gives the name, address and vet info for shelters all over the world with their current status (in terms of bills, number of ferrets, etc.) We have been in operation since September 1997 and became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in January 2001 so our donors may receive tax deductions for their gifts. Most of the funds S.O.S. raises go into a general pool for periodic distribution to the shelters on the list. Support is provided in the form of payment to shelter vets or gift certificates for ferret supplies. We also administer donations designated for a specific shelter or specific emergency rescues of large numbers of ferrets. The women of Support Our Shelters receive no compensation. This event first ran in 2007.

Fiddler's Frolics, Halletsville (US-TX): April 22-24

Fiddlers Frolic is the annual Texas state fiddling championships in Hallettsville, Texas. The competition occurs over several days and includes contests and prizes for fiddling and bar-b-que, as well as adult events in the evening and family events during the day. Over 15,000 people attend each year and the winner of the fiddling contest walks off with $25,000.
