Grand Prix of Azerbaijan (AZ): September 4-6

06:20 AM | -
AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX RACING ASIDE THE CASPIAN SEA Under the historic skyline and along the Caspian Sea, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix roars through Baku each fall on the 3.73‑mile (6.003 km) Baku City Circuit, a high-speed street course renowned for its long straights and tight castle-like corners. The venue hosted its first Formula One event in June 2016 as the European Grand Prix, before adopting the official name Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017, when Daniel Ricciardo claimed the first Azerbaijan‑branded victory in his Red Bull from 10th on the grid. The race currently consists of 51 laps, covering approximately 190.17 miles (306.05 km) as per FIA regulations. The Baku street circuit winds past landmark sites including the Maiden Tower and Government House, featuring a jagged mix of narrow old‑town passages and a 2 km flat‑out boulevard, where speeds can approach 230 mph(370 km/h). The course includes 20 turns, among which the famed Turn 8 through the historic castle section is just 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide—nearly single‑file racing through the old city. What defines a Formula 1 car? A Formula One car is a precision-engineered, single-seat, open-wheel vehicle built under strict FIA “Formula” rules. Including the driver, it weighs approximately 1,760 lb (798 kg). Its power comes from a 1.6‑litre V6 turbocharged hybrid engine, combining internal combustion with energy-recovery systems to deliver high efficiency and peak power. The chassis is a rigid carbon-fiber monocoque, while aerodynamic appendages—such as front and rear wings, floor tunnels, and diffusers—generate massive downforce, enabling lateral cornering forces exceeding 5 G. Real-time telemetry relays critical data between the car and the pit wall, making contemporary F1 cars technological marvels as well as racing machines. History of Formula One Racing Formula One racing officially began in 1950, with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone inaugurating the FIA World Championship. Emerging from early 20th‑century European Grand Prix tradition, the sport rapidly expanded into a global series. Legends such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and Lewis Hamilton have defined their eras. Today, F1 spans five continents, blending elite driving, team strategy, advanced engineering, and global popularity. Since its debut in Baku, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has become a standout for dramatic high-speed battles and city‑centre thrills. From its inception as the 2016 European GP through its Azerbaijan‑branded rebirth in 2017, it has delivered upset winners, tight margins, and high drama—most recently showcasing rising stars like Oscar Piastri in a chaotic 2024 race. With its blend of history, speed, and spectacle, Baku offers a modern chapter in Formula One’s enduring global legacy.

Grandma Moses Day (1860): September 7

06:20 AM | -
You are never too old to follow your dreams. Laura Ingles Wilder began writing the Little House series in her 60s and didn't publish her last book until age 78. Grandma Moses, the primitive American artist, didn't begin painting until she was 78! Today is the anniversary of her birth and a celebration of never being too old to try something new.

Grandparents Day, Ntl.: September 6

Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Grito de Dolores (MX)(1810): September 15

06:20 AM | -
INDEPENDENCE BEGINS WITH A SHOUT EL GRITO DE DOLORES IN MEXICO Grito de Dolores is a pivotal event in Mexican history, marking the beginning of the country's struggle for independence from Spanish rule. Celebrated annually on the night of September 15 into the early hours of September 16, this holiday commemorates the moment in 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest, called for rebellion against the Spanish authorities. This call is famously known as the "Grito de Dolores" or "Cry of Dolores." Grito de Dolores celebrates the start of the Mexican War of Independence. It honors the courage and determination of the Mexican people who sought to free themselves from colonial oppression. The event is both a patriotic celebration and a moment of reflection on the nation's history and the values of freedom and justice. The celebrations begin on the evening of September 15, when the President of Mexico reenacts the famous cry from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City. This act, known as "El Grito," involves ringing a bell and shouting, "¡Viva México!" and "¡Viva la independencia!" The crowd responds with enthusiastic cheers. This tradition is mirrored in towns and cities nationwide, with local officials performing similar ceremonies. The festivities continue with fireworks, music, parades, and traditional foods. The atmosphere is one of national pride, and people often dress in the colors of the Mexican flag—green, white, and red. HISTORY OF THE EVENT The original "Grito de Dolores" occurred in the town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo) in the early hours of September 16, 1810. Father Miguel Hidalgo, who had grown increasingly disillusioned with Spanish rule and the exploitation of indigenous people, rang the church bell to gather his parishioners. He delivered a passionate speech urging them to rise against the Spanish, which ignited the fight for independence. Hidalgo's cry is said to have included appeals to end Spanish domination and redistribute land. Though the exact words of the cry are debated, the essence of the message was a call to arms for Mexican independence. This event set off a series of battles and campaigns that ultimately led to Mexico's independence in 1821. WHO IS DOLORES, AND WHY DID SHE CRY OUT? The name "Dolores" refers to the town of Dolores, where Father Hidalgo made his call to arms. The town's name translates to "sorrows" or "pains" in English, but in this context, it doesn't refer to a person named Dolores but instead to the town itself. The "cry" was a symbolic call for action against the injustices and suffering imposed by colonial rule. The Grito de Dolores symbolizes resistance and the enduring spirit of the Mexican people. It is a critical moment in Mexican history and a deeply ingrained cultural tradition that continues to unite the nation in a shared identity and purpose.

Guacamole Day, Ntl.: September 16

06:20 AM | -
There are two unofficial events celebrating guacamole in the calendar: Guacamole Day on September 16 and Spicy Guacamole Day on November 14 each year. Neither event has a sponsor, and both appeared online several years ago. Late summer is the traditional season for avocados, though several varieties are available year-round from different areas of the world. HISTORY OF GUACAMOLE The history of guacamole, a popular dish whose roots originate with the Aztecs of ancient Mexico, is as rich and complex as its flavor. The original Aztec version, "ahuacamolli," was a simple mixture of mashed avocados, tomatoes, and salt. This dish was more than just a culinary staple; it played a significant role in Aztec culture due to the avocado's nutritional value and the belief in its aphrodisiac properties. With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, guacamole expanded. The Spaniards, who had never seen avocados before, were initially skeptical but quickly developed a taste for the fruit. They modified the original recipe, adding ingredients like onions, lime, and cilantro – elements generally fundamental to guacamole as we know it. The dish spread to other regions as the Spanish continued their explorations, eventually reaching Europe and other parts of the world. In each new location, guacamole evolved, incorporating local flavors and ingredients, reflecting the culinary practices of each region. Guacamole's journey into American cuisine began in the early 20th century, particularly in the southwestern states, where Mexican culture had a significant influence. It gained popularity in the United States post-World War II, as American soldiers returned home with a taste for the foods they had encountered abroad, including guacamole. Today, guacamole is a global food celebrated for its versatility and flavor. It's a staple in Mexican cuisine, a spread in American households, especially during events like the Super Bowl, and a gourmet addition to menus worldwide. Guacamole ingredients today range from the traditional to the innovative, with chefs adding ingredients like pomegranate seeds, mango, or even seafood, bacon, and wasabi. The history of guacamole is a testament to the dish's ability to transcend cultures and time, evolving while maintaining its core identity – a unifying thread in the culinary tapestry of the world.

Guide Dog Month, Ntl.: September

06:20 AM | -
NATIONAL GUIDE DOG MONTH: CELEBRATING THE VITAL ROLD OF GUIDE DOGS National Guide Dog Month, observed every September, is dedicated to raising awareness and support for guide dog programs across the United States. Founded in 2008 by actor and animal advocate Dick Van Patten, the initiative honors the extraordinary contributions guide dogs make to the lives of visually impaired individuals. THE HISTORY OF GUIDE DOGS The concept of guide dogs dates back to the aftermath of World War I when German shepherds were first trained to assist blinded veterans. The idea quickly spread, and in 1929, the first guide dog school in the United States, The Seeing Eye, was established in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, guide dogs have become indispensable companions, offering independence and mobility to those with visual impairments. BREEDS THAT MAKE THE BEST GUIDE DOGS While several breeds work well, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds are among the most popular choices for guide dogs due to their intelligence, temperament, and strong work ethic. Their ability to remain calm in various environments and loyalty make them ideal for safely guiding visually impaired individuals. GETTING INVOLVED IN NATIONAL GUIDE DOG MONTH There are numerous ways to participate in National Guide Dog Month: Donations—Many organizations rely on donations to train and support guide dogs. Contributions help cover the substantial costs associated with breeding, training, and placing these dogs with individuals in need. Volunteering—Many guide dog programs welcome volunteers to assist with puppy raising, training, and administrative support. Education and Advocacy—Spreading awareness about the importance of guide dogs and the challenges visually impaired individuals face can help garner support for these programs. Sharing information on social media, hosting events, or participating in local awareness campaigns are effective ways to contribute. Sponsorship—Sponsoring a guide dog in training is another impactful way to support the cause. Sponsors often receive updates on the dog's progress and can feel a direct connection to the impact of their contribution. THE IMPORTANCE OF GUIDE DOGS Guide dogs play a crucial role in the lives of visually impaired individuals, offering more than just mobility. They provide companionship, safety, and a sense of independence. Guide dogs help handlers navigate daily obstacles, ensuring they can move around confidently and quickly. The bond between a guide dog and its handler is profound, fostering emotional well-being and enhancing the quality of life. National Guide Dog Month reminds us of these animals' incredible impact and the continued need for support to train and provide guide dogs. Through awareness and involvement, we can ensure that more individuals receive the life-changing assistance these remarkable dogs offer.
