Saint Georges Caye Day, (BZ)(1798): September 10

06:20 AM | -
The Battle of St. George's Caye (September 3-10, 1798) marked a significant conflict in the wider Anglo-Spanish War. The Spanish had previously attempted to expel the British Baymen from the area in the 18th century, but those attempts had largely failed. By 1798, the Spanish had gathered a fleet to remove the British from the area. Aware of the impending attack, the Baymen held a public meeting to decide whether to defend their settlements or evacuate. Historical accounts note that the evenly split decision came down to a single vote, that of Thomas Barrow, who voted in favor of fighting. The Baymen requested assistance from Jamaica, which sent a force to assist them. The deciding battle for the Baymen occurred on September 10, when the Baymen, bolstered by British naval support, engaged the Spanish fleet, ultimately forcing Spain to retreat. This victory solidified the British presence in the region, and it was a significant step towards the eventual establishment of British Honduras, which became the modern nation of Belize. In Belize, the Battle of St. George's Caye is commemorated annually on September 10 as a national holiday.

Salami Day: September 7

06:20 AM | -
Salami Day honors the cured sausage called salami, which has existed for more than 2,000 years. This Mediterranean delicacy morphed into several varieties as it spread from country to country. Salami is fermented meat and thus contains lactic acid bacteria, and its name comes from the Italian word salame, meaning salt. Salami is made from beef or pork and spices. Salami Day was created in 2006 in Henrico, Virginia, by the Salami Appreciation Society.

Flu Season Ends, Southern: September 30

06:20 AM | -
It looks like you made it! Flu season south of the equator is over for this year. Influenza activity peaks at the end of August in most regions in Australia, with Tasmania and the Northern Territory experiencing a late rise. Meanwhile, Western AU reports increased activity from mid-August through September. Although the World Health Organization has reported that influenza activity has continued to decline in all temperate countries of the southern hemisphere, that doesn't mean people shouldn't take the necessary precautions. Influenza-like illnesses have increased in many European countries.

Folic Acid Awareness Week: September 6-12

06:20 AM | -
FOLIC ACID AWARENESS WEEK: PROMOTING PRENATAL HEALTH One of two focus weeks on folic acid, health advocates across the United States observe Folic Acid Awareness Week, a dedicated effort to educate the public about the critical role of folic acid in health, particularly in prenatal development. This initiative, led by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aims to raise awareness about the benefits of folic acid and encourage its consumption among women of childbearing age. The primary goal of Folic Acid Awareness Week is to highlight the importance of folic acid in preventing birth defects and to promote its consumption through diet and supplements. The campaign seeks to inform women about the necessity of adequate folic acid intake before and during pregnancy, as well as its broader health benefits. WHAT IS FOLIC ACID? Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, a B-vitamin (B9) naturally found in certain foods. It is crucial for the production and maintenance of new cells, DNA synthesis, and overall cellular function. Foods rich in folate include leafy green vegetables, fruits, beans, and fortified grains. Folic acid is also available as a dietary supplement and is commonly added to fortified foods such as cereals and bread. THE IMPORTANCE OF FOLIC ACID IN PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT Folic acid is essential for prenatal development, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy. Key benefits include: Preventing Neural Tube Defects—Adequate folic acid intake before and during early pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida and anencephaly, which occur when the neural tube does not close properly. Supporting Placental Development—Folic acid plays a role in the formation of the placenta, supporting the transfer of nutrients from mother to baby. Reducing Other Birth Defects—Folic acid may also help prevent other birth defects, including some congenital heart defects and cleft lip and palate. DO POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN STILL NEED FOLIC ACID? While the primary focus of folic acid intake is often on women of childbearing age due to its critical role in preventing birth defects, postmenopausal women still benefit from adequate folic acid intake for overall health. Folic acid supports: Cellular Health—Continued cell production and maintenance are essential for overall health and well-being. Cardiovascular Health—Folic acid helps reduce homocysteine levels in the blood, which is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Cognitive Function—Adequate folic acid intake has been linked to better cognitive function and may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Folic Acid Awareness Week serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of folic acid in promoting prenatal health and preventing birth defects. By raising awareness and encouraging the consumption of folic acid, the campaign aims to improve health outcomes for women and their babies. Supported by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network and the CDC, this initiative underscores the need for continued public health education and access to essential nutrients for all women, regardless of age.

Food Hero Month, Be a, Ntl.: September

06:20 AM | -
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program in the United States that provides nutritional food to low-income families. Part of becoming self-sufficient is being healthy, and food is where that starts. Many low-income families cannot afford three meals a day. Schools often provide breakfast and lunch to disadvantaged children, and nutrition is essential to their physical and cognitive development. To raise awareness about the importance of families eating together and nutrition in maintaining health and growth, SNAP created National Be a Food Hero Month in 2009. Families are encouraged to share meals and learn about nutrition this month.

Food Loss and Waste, Intl. Day of Awareness of : September 29

06:20 AM | -
The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste calls for the prioritization of efforts by both public and private sectors to reduce food loss and waste. This goal aligns with the more efficient use of natural resources, climate change mitigation, and enhanced food security and nutrition. Approximately 14% of global food is lost after harvest but before retail, and about 17% is wasted at the retail and consumption levels. This waste contributes 8-10% of total global greenhouse gases, contributing to climate instability and extreme weather events which negatively affect crop yields, reduce nutritional quality, cause supply chain disruptions, and threaten food security and nutrition. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 12, target 12.3, calls for halving global food waste per capita at retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains. With an estimated 3.1 billion people without access to a healthy diet, and about 828 million people facing hunger, the need to reduce food loss and waste is urgent. As there are only eight years left to achieve the target, the necessity of scaling up action to reduce food loss and waste is paramount. Reducing food loss and waste not only offers immediate climate benefits, but it also enhances the overall sustainability of our food systems. This transformation is crucial for ensuring better planetary and nutritional outcomes for current and future generations.

Food Stamps Day (1959): September 11

06:20 AM | -
It is a common misconception that the US Food Stamps Program for low-income Americans came about during the New Deal of the Roosevelt era. It took longer. A congressional bill created the program on September 11, 1959, making surplus food available to people. The Eisenhower administration signed the two-year experiment into law on September 21, 1959. However, the program was not implemented. It would take an Executive Order from President John F. Kennedy to get the ball rolling by creating stamps and removing the requirement that food comes from national surplus reserves. Finally, the Johnson administration, in 1964, would make it a permanent US Government program and expand it to 40 countries struggling with food insecurity overseas. Today this program is referred to as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and is primarily administered by private contractors through the Department of Agriculture.

The event harnesses the enthusiasm and spirit of football fans nationwide, encouraging them to wear their team colors proudly while raising awareness and funds for children with cancer. Since its inception, Footy Colours Day has grown in popularity, with schools, businesses, and community groups participating in the fun and fundraising activities. While Footy Colours Day celebrates Australia's deep love for football, its primary focus is supporting young cancer patients. The day serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of children battling cancer, and the funds raised go directly to providing educational support programs for these young patients. The event highlights the importance of community and solidarity, bringing people together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children facing significant health challenges. FUNDRAISING FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER The funds raised during Footy Colours Day directly support the Fight Cancer Foundation's education programs, which ensure that children undergoing cancer treatment can continue their schooling. These programs help young patients keep up with their studies, maintain social connections, and transition back to school after treatment. By participating in Footy Colours Day, Australians contribute to a vital cause, providing hope and support to children and their families during a challenging time.

Fortune Cookie Day: September 13

06:20 AM | -
The fortune cookie idea originated in Japan in the mid-19th century. Per Japanese tradition, fortunes, referred to as omikuji, were placed inside a cookie and served to guests. At the turn of the century, this idea found its way to a Japanese tea house in San Francisco via the Benkyodo Bakery. Rather than the traditional sesame and miso batter, the bakery changed to butter, vanilla, and flour batter and called them "fortune tea cakes." Los Angeles and Hong Kong have competing claims for the title of "creator of the fortune cookie." Frankly, both claims are irrelevant. The idea and concept originated in Japan. The competing cities fine-tuned it.

Fun Fair Month, World: September

06:20 AM | -
WORLD FUN FAIR MONTH FOCUSES ON CAREERS IN SHOWMANSHIP AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FAIRS September 2021 marked the inaugural World Fun Fair Month (WFFM), an international community awareness month for the traveling fairground industry. Promoted by Future4Fairgrounds, WFFM celebrations include flags and banners featuring the event's distinctive logo at many fairgrounds. Celebrated across the UK and worldwide, WFFM aimed to unite showmen and bring communities together to celebrate all aspects of the fairground and the joy fairs bring. Showmen from the UK, Europe, North America, and Australasia engage, ensuring the event is global. To kick off the month, Future4Fairgrounds launched a video titled "I Am A Showman" to raise awareness of the showpeople community and demonstrate their unity. Showmen of all ages and from various nations participate. After over a year of COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns, people were encouraged to visit their local fairs to enjoy a family-friendly day out. World Fun Fair Month celebrates not just the fairground industry but also the people who share their unique cultural heritage as showmen, a tradition passed down through generations. Showmen are intrinsically linked to the towns they visit and the fairgrounds, which have been community staples for centuries. Future4Fairgrounds aimed to ensure that this history and culture were recognized and celebrated. Additionally, Future4Fairgrounds promoted the children's book "The Show Must Go On" by distributing 1,000 copies to 200 primary schools. The book tells the story of a family of traveling showpeople defending their yard from developers. Colleen Roper of Future4Fairgrounds said the World's Fair, "[the book] is truly extraordinary. It portrays a subject that has never been covered before in this way, raising awareness of our community accurately and positively through education." The group also supplied teaching resources accompanying the book, which have been valuable in helping represent the showmen community positively in UK schools. "By giving teachers an opportunity to plan lessons around our industry, perceptions of showmen can be changed from the ground up," Roper said. Funds for the book project were raised through the sale of World Fun Fair Month merchandise, such as flags and banners, which remained visible at fairs well beyond September. September was a busy month for Future4Fairgrounds. They also initiated an inclusive online education event, "Showmen: Getting a Fair Education," supported by Buckingham University. This event, evolving from the school book project, aimed to help higher education facilities learn more about the showmen industry and way of life, supporting positive inclusion and celebrating the community's history and contributions. "Showmen are leading the way to empower schools, colleges, and universities to help higher education facilities learn more about our industry and way of life, to support positive inclusion and celebration of our community's history and contribution to society," Roper explained. "This has been something we didn't anticipate when we first had the idea for World Fun Fair Month, so it has been truly wonderful to see the schools project evolve in this way." Roper added, "During the past two traveling seasons, fairgrounds worldwide were canceled. Showmen have endured huge financial losses and uncertainty as a result. WFFM represents a fantastic opportunity to recover by reminding people of all the joy a fair brings to the town and welcoming families back for a fun day out."
