World Sparrow Day celebrates the house sparrow, which was once the most common bird in the world. But in the past few years, this bird has declined over much of its natural range, both in urban and rural habitats. The decline of the house sparrow is an indicator of the continuous degradation of the environment.
World Sparrow Day underscores the need to conserve sparrows and urban biodiversity. This event brings together individuals with national and international groups while attracting the attention of government agencies and the scientific community.
