In France and several other European countries, Old Maid's Day falls on November 25, Saint Catherine's Day (Catherine of Alexandria 287AD-305AD).
Saint Catherine was, among other things, the patron saint of old maids and young, unmarried girls alike. At just 18 years old, she was executed for converting to Christianity at the age of 14. She is considered one of the great martyrs of the faith.
Old Maid's Day honors her sacrifice on the feast day attributed to her. It is a day for single women to get out and meet potential mates, no matter their age.
