Mawlid an-Nabi, or Mawlid in Islam, is the day set aside for the birth of the Prophet Muhammed. Practicing Muslims usually follow the mention of his name with "Peace be upon him" or the initials PBUH.
Mawlid occurs on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar, which is why it moves from year to year.
The founder of the faith of Islam lived from 570 AD - June 8, 632 AD. His full name was Abū al-Qāsim Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim.
His name is quite long, a tribal tradition in Arab and Persian cultures. Each "ibn" designates "son of" in parental lineage. The Prophet rests in Medina, Saudi Arabia, beneath the mosque known as "The Green Dome."
Typically Muslims do not celebrate this day. Instead, it is a day of reflection and thought.
