World Rivers Day expanded from BC Rivers Day, created by Mark Angelo of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, in 1980. Upon the designation of Water for Life Decade by the United Nations in 2005, it became an annual event observed on the fourth Sunday of September. Currently, over 60 nations partake in the event.
World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world's waterways. It highlights the many values of rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.
