A Fig Newton is a soft cookie filled with fig jam. A machine invented in 1891 made the mass production of Fig Newtons possible.
James Henry Mitchell invented a machine which funneled the dough and jam into two separate channels which then produced an endless tube of dough encasing jam. This tube was cut into smaller pieces. The Kennedy Biscuit Works were the first company to use Mitchell's invention to mass-produce the cookies.
Originally called the Newton, the name was later changed to Fig Newton. The cookies were named after the Massachusetts town of Newton.
