First Foot Day, Scottish in origin, celebrates the first-foot (the first dark haired gentlemen), to cross the threshold of a home on New Year’s Day. This person is seen as the bringer of good fortune for the coming year.
According to tradition not every first-foot can be the bringer of good fortune. It is thought only a tall dark-haired gentleman can be the bringer of good luck.
And the fair-haired gentlemen among us? Most believe them to bring very bad luck for the new year, though a few think it matters not.
However, all agree that a woman being the first-footer, the “ladies first” method of entering a room, is probably the worst thing you can do for luck by far.
Hey, it’s a custom. It doesn’t have to make sense or be politically correct!
