Martin Luther King Holiday was first organized in 1986 to celebrate the civil rights leader's life and great contributions to western society. He was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. The national holiday moves to allow for a three-day weekend in the United States.
Dr. Martin Luther King was an American pastor who rose to prominence in the 1950s as a voice for social justice and equal rights. His distinctive auditory style galvanized an entire movement and played a key role in the 1964 Civil Rights act, which made the discrimination of persons based upon race, ethnicity, origin, religion or sex, a crime. He is considered one of the most influential people of the 20th Century.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
