Thomas Crapper Day honors Thomas Crapper an English plumber born in Yorkshire in 1837, who died on this day in 1910.
Though he is often credited with inventing the modern flushing toilet, he actually improved upon it and developed a number of other inventions that contributed to modern sanitation.
The humble privy in our bathrooms was actually a novelty to the American soldiers returning through England after WWI. The 'porcelain throne' often bore the brand name ‘Crapper’, thus Thomas’ association with its invention. Unless you’ve traveled to other parts of the world where the western toilet is often non-existent or replaced with the vile, in the floor squat pots, you’ve probably never appreciated how important Crapper’s inventions and advancements are to your health and comfort. Or what a messy and uncomfortable process doing one’s business once was and can still be in some parts of the world.
Today we honor Crapper, give thanks for his inventions.
