Every 10 years the United States does a census to determine the population and its characteristics within the US and its territories. The outcome affects funds given for schools, infrastructure, social programs, voting districts and nearly every other touchpoint between government and people. It’s not about whether a person is a citizen. It is about making sure services and infrastructure are adequate for the population present.
2020 is the first time residents of the United States (up to 80%) will be able to fill out their census form online instead of by paper or through the mail. Those without adequate internet services will still be able to ask for assistance and receive a paper copy.
Results are typically compiled over the following year with the report generated used as the foundation for planning over the upcoming decade.
