The Year of the Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) is declared on occasion by the US military to highlight the achievements, professionalism and focus training on the needs of NCOs throughout the year. The last time an NCO year was held was in 2009.
A non-commissioned officer is a person in a leadership position within the US military who did not come by their rank via Service Academy, the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), or an Officer Candidate School. NCOs include specialists, corporals, and sergeants.
This year focuses on their needs, training and advancement both within the military and via the civilian services and communities to which they belong.
