The United Nations has proclaimed the period from 2021 to 2030 as the International Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This initiative, spearheaded by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, seeks to bolster scientific research and innovative technologies to understand the ocean's dynamics better and integrate ocean science more comprehensively into policy-making.
The Decade provides a unique opportunity to strengthen international cooperation in ocean science and unite stakeholders from various sectors around a common framework emphasizing sustainable management of ocean resources. It aims to foster greater public awareness and to support and scale up ocean science technology and infrastructure.
The IOC outlines several objectives for the Decade, including generating new knowledge, supporting an accessible ocean data repository, increasing interdisciplinary research, and promoting partnerships. It also seeks to enhance the contribution of ocean science to sustainable development across all levels, from local communities to global governance.
Through this concerted effort, the UN aims to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 14: Life Below Water, which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources.
The International Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development embodies the collective acknowledgment of the ocean's critical role in our planet's health and the well-being of humanity. It's a strategic push to bridge the gap between the science we need and the ocean we want for the future of our planet.
