Plum Pudding, also known as Christmas pudding, originated in England and is traditionally made five weeks before Christmas on the Sunday before Advent. It is a British holiday tradition.
The day of preparation is referred to as "Stir-up Sunday". Each family member or child in the household gives the pudding a stir and makes a wish. Items are added to the batter including silver coins for increased wealth, wishbones for good luck, a silver thimble signifying thriftiness, a ring to protect or bring on marriage and an anchor for safe harbor and security. Prunes are a main ingredient, ergo plum pudding.
Traditionally plum pudding could be stored without refrigeration for several weeks. When the family was ready to eat it, they would steam it to return the moisture.
