The first running of the Daytona 500 was in 1959. The race was won by Lee Petty driving and Oldsmobile and he completed the race averaging 135.521 mph. The fastest ever car in the Daytona 500 was Bill Elliot, driving a Ford in 1987. He won the race averaging 176.263 mph!
Thirty-six men have died racing in the Daytona 500 including the legendary Dale Earnhardt on February 18, 2001. The last fatality as of this writing occurred February 3, 2008.
